Lawyers for the family of Michael Brown said Thursday they are gearing up for a wrongful-death lawsuit against Ferguson, Missouri, police and Officer Darren Wilson a day after federal prosecutors cleared the ex-cop in the unarmed teenager's fatal shooting.
The suit will be filed "very shortly," lawyer Anthony Gray said at a news conference, and will include evidence that will present a "more clear, more accurate picture about what took place that day." Wilson previously told a grand jury that he feared for his life during the Aug. 9 encounter with 18-year-old Brown on a Ferguson street.
A Department of Justice report released Wednesday said there was not enough evidence to support prosecuting Wilson for federal civil rights offenses against Brown. But outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder said an investigation uncovered a "highly toxic environment" of racism and misconduct within the police force, aimed at the St. Louis suburb's black residents.
Another lawyer for the family, Daryl Parks, said that while the standard for federal charges is more stringent, a civil suit could end up in the family's favor. "We get to set the stage, and we plan to do just that," Parks said.
The teen's parents, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, declined to speak to reporters, but their lawyer said that the Justice Department's decision Wednesday was difficult for the family to hear.
"For his parents to sit there and hear from DOJ officials was a tough day for them," Parks said, adding, "They don't accept this self-defense theory."
Ferguson police and city officials didn't immediately respond to the Brown family's plans. On Wednesday night, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said the city has taken steps to correct misconduct on the police force, and has fired one official and suspended two others.
but His grandma raised him!!!!!
That’s who I feel sad for. The grandma, who raised MB only for his sperm donors to try to profit off his death.
Will Momma file the lawsuit before or after she & her current “husband” (wink-wink) are charged with beating up & robbing her own mother for selling Michael Brown t-shirts on a street corner?
Isn’t that the name of the new children’s show on CBS?
What the hell is the matter with this black bunch of asses? Wilson, sue the hell out of them for bring and allowing their kid to be a typical goon.
I am trying to get Verizon Wireless to sue me for that very reason, but they just keep selling their phony debt.
Case dismissed.
Ferguson is insured. Trayvon's lawyer got them $1.5 Mill, and they never had to go to court. This sort of case with an easily played 'Race Card' is the new "Slip and Fall" legal practice.
Wet floor at the supermarket? Automatic $25Thou. Dead black thug? Automatic $1Million+, or so they hope. Algonquin J. Calhoun, Esq., my personal attorney, is available for this sort of "civil action."
Me? My job is to sit in court sobbing, tearing tissues, and occasionally humming, "We Shall Overcome."
That would sure be appropriate. He should get an attachment on every penny they make off of their thug son for the rest of their lives.
Racist blacks have invented a new industry.
They figure what good does it do to birth a kid who becomes a criminal thug if you can’t make a million or two when he gets himself killed for his crimes.
If I were Mr. Wilson, I’d move my family somewhere where they can’t be found. Turn over his assets to someone else. If by chance the “family” wins its lawsuit, good luck trying to collect.
Gee, I bet officer Wilson might have a whole $20 bucks or so. Talk about blood from a turnip.
He should sue the parents for harassment.
The tee-shirt business must be all dried up.
The cash cow they all hoped for...it did not fall into their lazy hands.
I hope they all lose their shirts, tee and otherwise.
Anywhere in the state, that's at least 100 miles from St. Louis and Kansas City and he will get a fair trial.
If justice is to be served the plaintiffs will find their complaint dismissed, a court order to reimburse Wilson for costs and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and their lawyer sanctioned for submitting a frivolous lawsuit.
YUP.
Obama and Holder too.
They should thank Officer Wilson, he’s saved them hundreds if not thousands they won’t have to put in his commissary account.
If the Gentle Giant, with his marijuana and criminal record, would have left the street and got on the sidewalk like he was told to, he’d be alive today. Nobody’s fault but his. He chose to attack the officer. He lost.
The store owners that the leftie gov threw under the bus by allowing their stores, livelihood and futures to be burned and trashed that day, should also sue the city. They actually DO have “standing”.
As soon as they drop this nonsense their income gets slashed. They will have to move in with Cindy Sheehan.
