The U.S. government on Thursday suspended its operations due to a blizzard that forced schools and offices in the Washington metropolitan area to close and expectations are for up to 20 cm (8 in.) of snow to blanket the region.
The U.S. government, which employs some 300,000 people in Washington and its vicinity, closed its doors although it is expected that some employees will be able to work from their homes.
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will hold a private meeting but do not have any other activities on their agendas for today and the daily White House press conference was cancelled.
The capital declared a "snow emergency" from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., and that means closing local schools and deploying snowplows and other cleaning services to keep the main streets clear of snow and ice.
The forecast indicates that the snow, which has fallen without letup since early Thursday morning and is expected to continue until later in the afternoon, could reach a depth of between 12 and 20 cm (about 5 to 8 in.), although it certainly may drift higher in places.

If you live in DC, not a good day to fly to Florida. Especially, if you happen to be flying Air Florida, and especially-especially if you are boarding flight number 90.
Need you ask?
And, on the Federal side, do government workers get make up pay without makeup work after a shutdown? Same principle... they always collect, we always pay.
well, somebody must’ve been praying for this ‘shutdown’, pretty hard, bacause here it is!
I nominate Washington Blizzard for the next Nobel Peace Prize.
Will anybody except fat lobbyists, Liberal control freaks(but, I repeat myself), and worthless Gibsmedats care?
Do the military personnel really need gloves at the Tomb of the Unknown Sholdier? I mean it would be more professional without the gloves. What is this sissyland suddenly. Get rid of the gloves. I am calling my Congressman. Oh that right they are home. Oh well maybe tomorrow.
New Law......No gloves for military personnel.
Do I really need a sarc tag? NO!
Oh, by the way, the federal workers ALWAYs get paid for their time off so it is a paid vacay.
As it should be. They didn’t request the day off. However, if you requested the day off, some do count it as leave and if you have a 2 hour delay and asked for the day off, you get all 8 hours counted and not 6-hours. Federal guidelines on time off are the strictest in the country.

Has ANYBODY NOTICED??
I didn’t think so!!
I’m in DC now. What I’m seeing is nothing for folks used to snow to get excited about.
No wonder I feel so good today. Thank you Lord.
Just until it warms up a little....
If the government will function without them it sounds absurd to talk about them “working” from their homes. Apparently they don’t do much of any importance in the office, what are they going to do from home?
Blizzard? C’mon. It was NOT a blizzard, it was just a heavy snowfall.
I moved to Baltimore about 5 years ago. Every single piddly bit of snow, I hear the same whiny excuse. Here’s an idea, buy some stupid snowplows.
These idiots waste money on everything else, but then, they’d have to take some responsibility and actually keep schools open for a whole week at a time.
I live in FLORIDA and work from home. I had a snow day today. Company I work for is located in Baltimore. Offices closed today life is good!
My office is in Baltimore but I’ve been based from home for a couple months. I think they worked all day.
Lucky me I guess I went surf fishing.
I spent the day preparing a presentation.
