FRESNO (KMJ) -- Federal agents say there could be as many as half a million untraceable guns on the streets of California.
They're called 'ghost guns' - firearms with no serial numbers and no means of identifying them.
They're turning up at crime scenes - and investigators then have nothing to go on to find out who was involved.
"People are buying these knowing there's no paper trial", says ATF Agent Graham Barlowe. "There's no way to trace it back to them - there's no accountability on their part.
"When you're asking yourself why would someone spend $5000 on a machine gun they're purchasing from a convicted felon, a gang member. I think the answers are all bad".

Why, there could be a hundred thousand BILLION such guns on the streets of California! We’ll never know the exact number because they’re all ghosts and they’re untraceable!
(facepalm)
I sure would hate to get shot by a machine gun with no serial number. That could be real bad.
Jerry Brown said when he vetoed the bill that he didn’t see how a serial number was going to contribute to public safety.
Automatic rifle is not a machine gun.
What about “Ghost People”?
Who’s to say any non-citizen is who he says he is?
They don’t have birth certificates or other government I.D.’s from their country of origin.
further, they never show up at hearings they are suppose to.
I’ll bet there are more Ghost People than there are ghost guns.
I don’t believe Jeremy Clark is being investigated for NFA violations.
Another trumped up issue or False Flag operation to set the scene to “justify” more gun control?
Let’s call this one “Son Of Fast and Furious”.
Interesting that you mentioned the Philippines. It was State Senator Yee who was indicted on charges of conspiring to import weapons from the Philippines.
What is a ghost gun? A pre-1968 .22 rifle generally has no serial number, because it never had one.
Sounds just as real as the History channel show about moonshiners.
Even a blind pig finds an acorn, once in a while.
He's still a moon-bat gun-grabbing greenie idiot.
Hey this can’t be true! Eric Holder told Congressional Committees that when he found out about the ATF running guns he put a stop to it.
I've been wanting me some of those 30 magazine clips...
No, an “automatic rifle” IS a machine gun.
A semi-automatic rifle is NOT a machine gun.
If I ever get my CNC mill up and running, everyone can GD Guarantee there won’t be a number on the whole thing
Well, I can't speak for that silly crap, but I do know that some high skill level 1911's have come out of the Philippines and out of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
It doesn't take much to make a 1911...simple construction, easily milled, even on "Harbor Freight" crap mills from China.
The hardest part is the barrel and the recoil spring.
I once saw a barrel being constructed out of a forged billet of steel...they drilled a pilot hole and slammed a rifling tool through it, then turned it down on a lathe.
I'm sure it was not quite a match-level weapon, but it will still fling a bullet and kill a man.
In Viet Nam, they would make a barrel by hammering a piece of steel around a solid piece of steel.
I still do not know how they got the rifling in there, but the pistol would damned well kill you.
The AK-47 is the most copied weapon in the world, with a huge majority of them being made in the back rooms of shacks in the rabbit warren back streets of Kabul, Baghdad, Mosul, you name it.
It is not difficult to do and no amount of griping and groaning and pissing and moaning from the ATF or the damned UN or anyone else is going to stop it.
Streets are paved with hard, dirty surfaces that would scratch your nice gun.
