They could always give them to police departments; I mean they’ve already given them all kinds of equipment like armored vehicles.

Seems like the Marines would want them.

Eh.
It's impractical, anyway.

With A-10s they have to get:
1. A-10 maintenance parts in their supply system.
2. A-10 training for their helo mechanics.
3. Transfer all those A-10 Air Force pilots to the Army (fat chance).
4. Find sufficient operation support (fixed wing is going to have different requirements).

That's just off the top of my head, and I'm not in the A-10 community.

I doubt this has anything to do with the capability of the aircraft. The Army is struggling to pay the bills for their existing programs, so there is no way for them to accept any platform on those terms. If they are given the aircraft, without the funding slice to support/integrate them, they would have to pay for sustainment, operations, facilities, and likely new training/staffing, as well as the cost of figuring out how to integrate them doctrinely and organizationally with the existing force. This would be a very large bill indeed.

Shows that promotions to upper ranks in the Army are now based on political reliability more than on talent, insight or love of country. Rejecting one of the best tools in the chest is not good policy.

Give ‘em to the Marines; I’ll bet they’d love ‘em!

That’s an Air Force mission as it should be and I’m sure the Air Force feels the same way,” McHugh said.

Inter-military squabbles are detrimental to a nation's defense. If they would consider the MISSION instead of their EGOS the we would be a whole lot better off.....................but then look who's CIC......................

As a soetoro appointee, he’s either an outright enemy islamist or a facilitator, so what would you expect him to say?

The F-15 and F-16 are not close air support aircraft. There too Damned fast and too delicate for the job.All it would take would be one round from an AK47 and the pilot of either of those planes could be in a cage and on fire.

These appointees are nuts.Espechially this Secretary of the Air Force.

Too bad really.

The Army AFAIK has nothing but praise for the ol’ Hog. The close air support that even two or three of these aircraft can provide is unparalleled.

The Army is simply not yet up to fly A10s however the Navy (Marines) is. And I am not talking about carrier operations. No need to modify the A10 for carrier ops.

A bad decision by the Army Secretary - but why not? We have so many other bad decisions during this administration.

Why use an A10 when a much more expensive and less appropriate option is available?

The army doesn’t have the pilots, the runways, or the money to take over the A-10s. Even if they could under the Key West Agreement.

The reason this isn’t consideration is because it violates the Warpowers Act. This created, among other things, the Department of the USAF. It also forebids the US Army from using fixed wing aircraft.

Every single A-10 flying is now a C model. Totally remanufactured and upgraded within the last few years.

We argue to try to keep airplanes that are nearly new and paid for while the Russians are increasing the number and upgrading their similar but less capable counterpart.
