RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Armed robbers stole $4 million in gold on Sunday from a truck traveling north along Interstate 95 from Florida to Massachusetts, authorities said Monday.
The two security guards working for Transvalue Inc. of Miami reported pulling off to the side of the interstate about 6 p.m. Sunday after their vehicle began having mechanical problems in Wilson County, the sheriffs office said. [snip]
They were then approached by three armed men driving a white van who ordered the guards to lie on the ground, tied their hands behind their backs and then marched them into nearby woods. The robbers then unloaded barrels filled with gold and made their getaway, according to a statement.

At $120 an ounce, it would be about 200 lbs.

Your picture brought back fond memories. As an aside, take a look at the man right under the E in the banner's WELCOME.
I believe that's a black man. Griffith was known to sneak a black into a scene now and again. That was a serious no-no back in the late ‘50’s and early 60’s. Even though he was a big lib, I gotta give ol’ Andy credit for that.

At today’s price of gold($1200 per oz) that would be 3,333 oz of gold.
Reeks of an inside job.

Where would this gold be fenced?Gold would probably not have to be "fenced" in the classic sense. Fencing implies that the buyer knows the goods are stolen, and is prepared to deal with that. For jewels that means remounting or even recutting. For gold, that's unlikely to be an issue. There is probably no way to tell the gold is stolen, as few gold coins have serial numbers. So you could just go into any pawn shop or coin store and exchange it for cash, or sell on e-bay.
In that sense gold is like cash, or more precisely coins. (only US bills have serial numbers, coins don't.)

$1200/ounce it would be 3333 ounces. or a bit over 200 lbs.And at .698 pounds per cubic inch, less than 300 cubic inches ... a stack 12in x12in x a little over 2 inches tall.
