HAPPY PURIM
Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.
The story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther. The heroes of the story are Esther, a beautiful young Jewish woman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai, who raised her as if she were his daughter. Esther was taken to the house of Ahasuerus, King of Persia, to become part of his harem. King Ahasuerus loved Esther more than his other women and made Esther queen, but the king did not know that Esther was a Jew, because Mordecai told her not to reveal her identity.
The villain of the story is Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to the king. Haman hated Mordecai because Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman, so Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people. In a speech that is all too familiar to Jews, Haman told the king, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your realm. Their laws are different from those of every other people's, and they do not observe the king's laws; therefore it is not befitting the king to tolerate them." Esther 3:8. The king gave the fate of the Jewish people to Haman, to do as he pleased to them. Haman planned to exterminate all of the Jews.
Mordecai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewish people. This was a dangerous thing for Esther to do, because anyone who came into the king's presence without being summoned could be put to death, and she had not been summoned. Esther fasted for three days to prepare herself, then went into the king. He welcomed her. Later, she told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people were saved, and Haman was hanged on the gallows that had been prepared for Mordecai.
The book of Esther is unusual in that it is the only book of the Bible that does not contain the name of G-d. In fact, it includes virtually no reference to G-d. Mordecai makes a vague reference to the fact that the Jews will be saved by someone else, if not by Esther, but that is the closest the book comes to mentioning G-d. Thus, one important message that can be gained from the story is that G-d often works in ways that are not apparent, in ways that appear to be chance, coincidence or ordinary good luck.

Unfortunately, my guitar player is a costumed performer in the Renaissance fair, so she has been very busy.
I left her with a list of songs for Sunday, and chose ones she already knows, so we should be OK.
Good Purim message today!
There is a fun movie about this Biblical event, called “One Night With The King”

Thanks very much, Kathy - a good day here. I repaired my walker - one of the wheels had fallen off due to a broken pin. As good as new for a total cost of $1.82!

GOSPEL FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
"The Transfiguration of Christ" Giovanni Bellini

_ |
ND after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. |
And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

Thanks for the post. I know I will be teaching a lesson “after the fact” but plan to develop a powerpoint for my Sunday School Class to introduce Purim and the events leading up to and then show the 20 minute Superbook “For Such a Time as This”. I checked out Amazon.com and found hamantaschen. . .haman’s ears and I guess I’ll introduce those to the class as well. I hope they taste as good as they look.

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Hamans plot to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day. The story in a nutshell: The Persian empire of the 4th century BCE extended over 127 lands, and all the Jews were its subjects. When King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti, executed for failing to follow his orders, he orchestrated a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queenthough she refused to divulge the identity of her nationality. Meanwhile, the anti-Semitic Haman was appointed prime minister of the empire. Mordechai, the leader of the Jews (and Esthers cousin), defied the kings orders and refused to bow to Haman. Haman was incensed, and convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the extermination of all the Jews on the 13th of Adara date chosen by a lottery Haman made. Mordechai galvanized all the Jews, convincing them to repent, fast and pray to G‑d. Meanwhile, Esther asked the king and Haman to join her for a feast. At the feast, Esther revealed to the king her Jewish identity. Haman was hanged, Mordechai was appointed prime minister in his stead, and a new decree was issuedgranting the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies. On the 13th of Adar, the Jews mobilized and killed many of their enemies. On the 14th of Adar, they rested and celebrated.

Good evening, EX...((HUGS))...and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.
We had about 30 minutes of light snow flurries, but it didn’t stick.
I think Pro said he has his next week, and I’m looking at early summer. I have to coordinate with my sister in CA who will probably come up to keep an eye on my Mom.
I think I’ll call the the doc and see what his exact timing is for both eyes. I don’t think they will let me drive home after the procedure.

Canteeners, I learned a little while ago that my friend and Brother-in-Arms HM/2 John Lesko passed away yesterday. John served with me as a ward corpsman at USNH Quantico and served afterwards with the 3rd MARDIV in northern I Corps, where he was wounded in action. We kept in touch through the years, although it has been many years since we actually met face-to-face.
John enjoyed his beer and knew more about Irish song than anyone else I have ever met. When I would call him on the phone, I greeted him by singing a few bars of "Outlaw Raparee" or "Brennan on the Moor" or some similar folk song. John was an avid fan of the Clancy's and Furey's - went to their concerts and entertained them in his home.
John, Semper Fi, Brother, and may you rest in eternal peace and may perpetual light shine upon you!
