Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.

His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

I read once, that at first he resented being tethered to the character, but thankfully that passed and overtime he just brought more and more to the role.

Rest in peace good sir. You will be missed.

He grew up in Mattapan, MA, my home town.

His Dad was a Barber on Blue Hill Ave, the main road that went from the center of Boston all the way out to the Blue Hills in Canton.

His family went to Temple Mishkin T’Fillah on Seaver Street (long ago moved out to Newton) and Leonard got the idea for the Vulcan Salute from the Priestly Blessing on Rosh Hoshana.

So I will quote the REAL “Live Long and Prosper”:

Numbers 6:22-27New International Version (NIV)
The Priestly Blessing

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

24 “‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’

27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

Blue Hill Ave

Remember driving into Boston with my mother in the '50s via Blue Hill Ave and seeing blocks of stores with hebrew lettering.

Yes...Kosher markets, Religious Bookstores, a real Interesting Community.

We had the most GORGEOUS theater, “The Oriental”, which was prettier than Grumman’s Chinese Theater.

Also, the “G & G Deli”, where politicians used to stand on the tables and give speeches, and the original foot-long hot dog joint, Simco By The Bridge!

Beverly Sills lived down the street, and most of my parents friends were Holocaust Survivors.

Donna Summer and bobby Brown also came from the neighborhood, but the demographics had changed by then.

Was my favorite character as a kid.

Watched him on my other favorite show, “In Search Of”. Liked him in the 1970’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.

I wonder if Tolkien will slap him silly over the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. I also liked him on Fringe.
