The US TV broadcast of this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday scored the event's lowest ratings in six years, averaging 36.6 million.
They were down by 16% on last year's ratings, according to Nielsen figures published by Variety.
First-time host Neil Patrick Harris received lukewarm reviews, while some have blamed the drop on a lack of nominations for films with mass appeal.

The weekend passed without a word of comment, without even noticing in our house. It was a good weekend.
I used to go to the movies a lot. Two or three times a week. Back when the movies were good and the price was low. I liked to watch the Oscars to see if the movie I really liked and was up for Best Movie would win. And most of the time, when my favorite movie did not win, I would be molified by having a movie that I watched and liked did win.
Now, most of these movies are trash. The good, entertaining movies are never up for an award. My wife and I started watching A Boy's Life. Got a third of the way through and we both decided to stop watching. Absolute garbage. The only schtick was it was filmed over 12 years. So what? When the story sucks and the characters are bad, what's the point.
And then Arquette gets up there and complains about equal pay. That's what I need - some millionaire complaining that people are not being paid equally. From a person who probably never had a job other than acting for over 20 years.
I go see the comic book movies and every once in awhile I will pay to see something like American Sniper or Lone Survivor. But back to what I said in the beginning - the movies cost way to much and suck too much for me to see them. Much less the award shows.
See folks....when you live in a self-created bubble like the present Obamabot, “Hollywood” low life, disgusting vermin do....you thrive in a life & world of fantasty and denial of reality!!! Now....maybe you see why Rudy Giuliani was right on the mark calling Obama an America hater...he is....that is fact!!!!
As for the Academy....there were only two films “The Grand Budapest Hotel” & “American Sniper” that deserved nominations. Of course...”American Sniper” should have won “Best Picture” Best Director (Clint Eastwood was not nominated) & Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), etc.
The Academy dived into the toilet of obscurity quickly. Look folks.....I’m a let live & let live guy....but you cannot have Obamabot, vermin, Gays & Black Racist haters, calling all the shots for the Academy....which is exactly what happened Sunday night!!!
Next year...the viewership will sink even further...unless the Academy dumps its present mantra, and presents a “picture of the true world as it is, with all of its diversity....across the board. Choosing Obama low life thugs and glorifying proven would be cop killers, like Michael Brown, Gays & Black racist America haters, is no way for the American film industry to go through life!!! End of story!!!
There a bunch of fools. The only one that isn’t is William....he sorta has to meet with the President if he is in America, but the rest....dumb folks!
Oscars was on? I was too busy watching walking dead.
Actually it was one of the first movies sent to the Academy members. Selma sent nothing.
But, but --- it was a Woody Allen movie! It was "ART".
Hubby and I watched The Theory of Everything the night before; so, I was glad that Eddie Redmayne got the acting award because he was unbelievably good in that role.
folks who make lots of money and get famous for doing something they enjoy— and then they want an award!?!? I’ve probably watched it once in my entire long life.
GONE GIRL is an incredible movie, based on an excellent book. I’d forgotten about it. It definitely deserved at least some nominations.
So, a “Do-It-Yourself” appendectomy with a bottle of Jack and a snail fork would be a better use of my time, eh?
That crowd was low all right
Email filing, cleaning the garage.....
A couple of weeks ago, I watched a Turner Classic Movies documentary on past Oscar shows. The best ones were from 1960 and earlier. Women in formal gowns, men in tuxes. The winners and presenters were dignified. No political speeches. Nothing outrageous. Those were events worth watching. Not anymore.
Now these award shows are preachy events promoting sodomy and other sinful behaviors. If I want preaching, I’ll go to church.
OTOH, the People's Choice Awards is determined by public voting.
Interesting how the box office sales don’t match the awards. It is just buddies giving buddies presents.
That is what all the award shows do. Nauseating. Seems to be one every week.
Nah - You remember Jack Klugman from “the Odd Couple”, right?!? ;-P
Oscar Gamble?
