The Washington Post editorial board is sharply criticizing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) for his "silence" on former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's controversial comments that President Obama does not love America.
Walker later did not condemn the comments.
The mayor can speak for himself," he said on CNBC the next morning. "Im not going to comment on what the president thinks or not. He can speak for himself as well."
The Post called Walker out for not making stronger comments, and noted that Walker said he would "punt" on a question about evolution earlier this month.
"Mr. Walker likes to present himself as a man of courage, based on his record in Wisconsin, but maybe facing down public-sector unions doesnt tell you all that much about the bravery of a Republican governor," the Post wrote. "On two occasions in recent days, he has proved himself incapable of saying basic truths that might offend some of his potential voters: First, that evolution is real, and second, that an honorable politician criticizes his opponents policies, not his patriotism."
The Post meanwhile praised Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a potential rival to Walker, for saying that I believe the president loves America."
A spokeswoman for Jeb Bush has likewise said that he "doesn't question President Obama's motives."
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), though, has backed Giuliani, also drawing a response from the Post.
"It was particularly pathetic to see Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), another would-be president, scrambling to steal some of the spotlight of Mr. Walkers cowardice by issuing a statement titled, 'Gov. Jindal Refuses to Condemn Mayor Giuliani,'" the Post wrote. "The only response to that can be, who cares?"
I’m disappointed that Gov. Walker didn’t say, “Well, of course. Everyone with two functioning brain cells knows that.”
One would hope that he does not have the intention of even responding to these transparent attacks. He’s gonna have to “Get Smart” if he wants to go farther.
The burden of reaction is on the President. That concludes MY silence on the matter.
Walking on eggs is not the way to become President and neither is too much lip flapping. The ball is in Obama’s court.
Rather than getting wrapped up in what other people say let their own words speak for themselves. Makes sense to me.
They are terrified of Walker.
Why would any ‘Republican’ deign to take anything the Washington post thinks, says or does seriously.
There is nothing he or anyone could say that would address their complaint. The complaint is the thing - facts don’t matter - merely the accusation and seriousness of the claim.
What’s going on here? Is Walker going to be condemned if he doesn’t comment on every single liberal “outrage” of the day?
I agree with what Walker said. Rudy can speak for himself. The president can speak for himself.
There’s no way to win these food fights which liberals start.
Just where is the “silence” of Hillary Clinton and others on the Dem side on Bill Ayers? What about the “silence” when Sarah Palin is blamed because some apolitical lunatic attacked Gabby Giffords? What about the silence about unfounded charges of “racism” every time someone says something the liberals don’t agree with? Not a word, and not a word of criticism from the usual suspects.
Or, "Don't need an League education to know that."
I know! He use to have guts. What’s wrong with him?
I’m glad he won’t take the bait. See the way Big Media loves to try to stir up trouble among Republicans. You don’t see them doing this to Democrats.
They FEAR Walker so much. They are scratching for anything that will stick. Reminds me of the panic Reagan caused the mainstream media. VERY reminiscent.
Commie scumbags at the WP are playing with fire.
The enemy within WILL be held to account.
I've never heard of this "basic truth", and when it is so obvious, it is most certainly reasonable to raise the inquiry, since the media will not do it.
The best response would have been something like: Well, I am not in the business of supporting or denying what another politician says during an interview. Regarding the content of what the Mayor said however, I would say that to the extent he might have a point, where were you when the Presient was vetted?
Don’t play their game. They want a bold statement that they can roundly criticize or one the can praise pissing off his supporters. Either way he loses.
King Obama is a communists black Muslim traitor.
