The Washington Post editorial board is sharply criticizing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) for his "silence" on former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's controversial comments that President Obama does not love America.
Walker later did not condemn the comments.
The mayor can speak for himself," he said on CNBC the next morning. "Im not going to comment on what the president thinks or not. He can speak for himself as well."
The Post called Walker out for not making stronger comments, and noted that Walker said he would "punt" on a question about evolution earlier this month.
"Mr. Walker likes to present himself as a man of courage, based on his record in Wisconsin, but maybe facing down public-sector unions doesnt tell you all that much about the bravery of a Republican governor," the Post wrote. "On two occasions in recent days, he has proved himself incapable of saying basic truths that might offend some of his potential voters: First, that evolution is real, and second, that an honorable politician criticizes his opponents policies, not his patriotism."
The Post meanwhile praised Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a potential rival to Walker, for saying that I believe the president loves America."
A spokeswoman for Jeb Bush has likewise said that he "doesn't question President Obama's motives."
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), though, has backed Giuliani, also drawing a response from the Post.
"It was particularly pathetic to see Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), another would-be president, scrambling to steal some of the spotlight of Mr. Walkers cowardice by issuing a statement titled, 'Gov. Jindal Refuses to Condemn Mayor Giuliani,'" the Post wrote. "The only response to that can be, who cares?"
Walker should simply state that he wasn’t born yesterday and he knows how this game is played. It doesn’t matter what he thinks about it because his opinion will be used to attack no matter what he thinks.
“Now if you would like to talk about actual foreign or domestic policy, I’d be happy to answer.”
Why snap at the bait from yet another ‘journalist’ looking for a gotcha comment on a fellow GOPer’s comment? Walkers’ reply was just right.
I think Obama should defend himself for a change, instead of VJ and the media
Don't be foolish! The leading contender to take on the demon-craps does not need to weigh in on each and every verbal spat of the day. It is utterly bone-headed to think he should! It lacks perspective and an appreciation of the long difficult battle ahead.
Unbelievable the lack of political common sense and insight that so many people have.
I see I made a joke that wasn’t sufficiently obvious. Sorry about that.
Yes, the left is terrified of Walker. He is smart and has beats them EVERY time on the political field of battle.
Walker implemented conservatism in Wisconsin and won the people’s hearts and minds.
It is unfortunate that so many FReepers are doing the liberals’ dirty work and are spreading LIES about Walker on these very pages.
But, in 2012, they are the same FReepers who took shots at every decent conservative until Romney was the nominee.
In 2008, they are the same FReepers who took shots at every decent conservative until McCain was the nominee.
Not this time.
I’m not a Walker fan, but his comments were right on the mark and the editorial board is wrong to criticise him for them.
Sen. Marco Rubio said WHAT? POTUS....he couldn’t love America because he is a Narcissist....aside from that his parents, grandparents and relatives all either disapproved of or hated America and walked to the Communist drummer....Obama chose similar thinking friends...they were not your Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Mayor Giuliani spoke the truth and the Left/Socialist/Communists in this country are having the same sort of hissy fit CAIR has every time Islam is exposed for what it is. The Mayor should be awarded a medal for telling the truth.
“The Post meanwhile praised Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a potential rival to Walker, for saying that I believe the president loves America.””
Absolute idiot. If he won’t back Rudy all Rubio had to say was “I can’t read the President’s mind but all of his policies are wrong for America ... etc”. But no Rubio had to say he thinks the President loves America. Based on what?
Very powerful graphic. May I send it along to others who may not frequent Freerepublic?
Good one.
Not only Obama, but a large swath of the leftist academic/media complex doesn’t love America either — and that likely includes the writer of the Post editorial.
Remember when Harry Reid claimed he knew for sure that Romney didn’t pay his taxes?
Did Obama comment?
Nope.
That is how liberals play dirty while keeping the candidate’s hands clean.
Nice to see Walker out-smart them again using his Ivy League education.......oops.
Yours is better.
The leftist bastards condemn you if you speak and if you don’t.
0 hates this country.
I was making a joke. I’d forgotten that one can’t make jokes during pre- pre- pre-election season. You’d think I’d remember, after all these years.
He could have said, “Did Giulani say that? I must have been dozing for a minute.”
