MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says recent video of a cougar is the 28th confirmed sighting in the Upper Peninsula since 2008.
The DNR posted a 60 second video Feb. 19 of the cat feeding on a deer carcass in Mackinac County. Two hunters from Remus used a trail camera to capture video of the male cougar repeatedly returning to the deer kill site to eat.
The DNR says cougars were originally native to Michigan, but were driven out of the state around 1900. The last known cougar taken in the wild occurred in 1906 near Newberry.
There were periodic reports of cougar sightings in the past century and since 2008, numerous cougar sighting reports from various locations in Michigan. The DNR says the resurgence of wild cougars is not unique to Michigan, but has been occurring in many other states in the Midwest and east.
You can submit cougar sighting reported to the DNR online.

Our (local) woods are full of poisonous snakes and Lyme disease carrying deer ticks, I only venture into them in wintertime.
Way too many cats, dogs, todlers too?
They said the same thing about Wolverines but my friends and I saw one near the Pine River back in the early 70s.
They say there is a Cougar running around that same area and I swear I saw it back in 2013 when I was spending so much time up there taking care of my mother's estate.
I think cougar's are cats, we need more of them here.

Laz was last spotted driving to Michigan
“Laz was last spotted driving to Michigan.”
What’s scary is how Laz gets them in the tree like that.
Savvy outdoors people will be OK. Top predators like this mainly get stupid people, and most stupid people vote democrat and/or hate the Republic.
i spotted one 3 years ago near roscommon...my brother was with me..
of course dnr said it was not possible
We live in area 5 miles north of Council Bluffs, Iowa across the river from Omaha and a couple years ago a neighbor took a picture of one in his backyard in the middle of the day. There’s about 30 houses on small acreages.
This is good news for proponents of open carry.
These same people who are in a snit over N.A. cougar population come back would be the same ones who just hate dirt poor African Lion poachers.

I wish I could agree, but consider teh csae of Anne Hellje, an ex-marine who found her face in the mouth of a cougar, Surprise, SURPRISE!
Had her friend not held onto her legs, and fought a good tug-o-war with that cat, she wwould have been lunch. Ffortunately, others also heard the screams and came to help.
There was a time when a cougar avoided even children, because of the Acute Llead Poisoning Syndrome induced into cougar careless enough to be seen by man.
When gunpowder speaks, beasts listen.
If she’s a Cougar then I’m a Gorilla!
Nooo. You gotta go shoot ‘em!
