The key to every great pop song is a righteous hook - a repetitious earworm that doesn't stop when the song does. Here's one of the monsters from 1965.

Texas born Domingo Samudio (stage name: Sam the Sham) was known for his campy robes and turbans, hauling his equipment in a 1952 Packard hearse with maroon velvet curtains and writing "novelty songs". As the front man for The Pharaohs, he sang on several Top 40 hits that broke the mold in the mid-1960s, notably "Li'l Red Riding Hood" and "Wooly Bully" which became a staple of cover bands coast to coast.

This song, written by Brian Holland (of the Motown songwriting team of Holland, Dozier & Holland) was a monster hit for Marvin Gaye in 1963. When the Stones covered it in 1964, it climbed the pop charts again. It's since charted for everyone from The Blues Brothers to Rod Stewart. You just can't keep a good song down.

I mentioned the value of buying albums earlier. In 1964 a band called Them released a hit called "Here Comes the Night" written and sung by a very young Van Morrison. We learned every song on the album and our favorite was "Gloria", however the song wasn't a hit because the influential Chicago station WLS had banned Them's original version and most radio stations followed suit due to it's "suggestive" lyrics.
Released in December 1965, Shadows Of Knight cover of "Gloria" received massive regional airplay. The band had slightly altered the song's lyrics, replacing Van Morrison's original "she comes to my room, then she made me feel alright" with "she called out my name, that made me feel alright" This simple change overcame the prevalent AM radio censorship of the era, and got the Shadows of Knight's cover version of the song onto playlists of stations which had censored the original. The single reached the #1 position on the WLS radio station's countdown, as well as on local rival WCFL. On the Billboard national charts, "Gloria" rose to #10. The secondary publication Cashbox ranked "Gloria" as high as #7. "Gloria" sold over one million copies for The Shadows of Knight, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A.
There is reason to believe the Billboard charting understated the song's popularity as The Shadows of Knight's version of "Gloria" reached number one in several markets where it received airplay. But, because Dunwich was not a national label, the single was released on a staggered basis around the country. This caused it to peak in certain markets before being released in others, diluting its weekly placement. Most significantly, the song received little airplay in certain major markets, such as South Florida (Miami) and California, where Van Morrison's release wasn't banned and "Gloria" had just been a major chart-topper the previous year. At any rate, we already had the song in our repertoire when it came out and local legend was The Shadows had stolen our song.
