Apple is recruiting experts in automotive technology and vehicle design to work at a new top-secret research lab, said several people familiar with the company, pointing to ambitions that go beyond the dashboard.
Dozens of Apple employees, led by experienced managers from its iPhone unit, are researching automotive products at a confidential Silicon Valley location outside the companys Cupertino campus, the people said.
Sir Jonathan Ives team of Apple designers has held regular meetings with automotive executives and engineers in recent months, in some cases trying to hire them. Recent recruits to Apples team include the head of Mercedes-Benzs Silicon Valley R&D unit.
The Apple research lab was set up late last year, not long after Apple unveiled its forthcoming smart watch and latest iPhones, which suggests that any resulting product may still be years away from release. Apple often investigates a wide range of new product areas, some of which never get released.

Fucik!
Well ... I’m not sure what’s going on here with this project. It seems to be a mystery right now. I actually would have a hard time believing a car is in the works. It may be something that “relates” to cars, but I kinda doubt it’s a car.
Nah, The Priaps, xB, Rogue, Soul, Element, etc. are already out there for that crowd.
They are likely trying to steal a march on Google with the driverless automation thing. Apple does know software.

The flying car we were promised in the 60’s?
I kinda doubt it’s a car ... :-) ...
Yeah, they do.
Yeah ... I think those kinds of science fiction flying cars are a long, long ways off ... :-) ...
Our cars right now are pretty well government controlled as it is ... :-) ...
Well it might not be a car, it depends on the word “experts.”
Experts in cup holders? Experts in marketing?
I was just poking a stick in the Apple fan boys cage.
FWIW I still have a Macintosh SE with a Grateful Dead sticker on it...
True enough, but there’s nothing that our masters want more than to have total control over our movements.
A car without a steering wheel for the masses?
That’s a liberal’s wet dream.
When Skynet drives you to downtown Detroit at 3 a.m. and kicks you out of the car, don’t come crying to me, sir.
Wow ... a Mac SE. I do remember that I liked my Mac SE/30 a lot!

Apple wants to figure out a way to text while driving without getting caught. Hushhhh!!!
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
FWIW, I did a stint related to automotive. I got to see a door open once of a product that never made it to the show room floor and tons of stories of Cars, materials, configurations, and engines that were tried and some killed at the last minute, and no I won't spill the beans on any of what I heard or saw. My stories are probably a drop in the bucket compared to what has been done in the last 30 years.
The point is, their is more Auto R & D going on than anyone in the lame stream media can rap their non-automotive arms around...
Anything to interface with Apple products.
Anything that helps you drive while using Apple products
Anything that causes you to give money to Apple while driving.
Put me on the team, I’m genieass.
