As she made the long journey from New York to South Africa, to visit family during the holidays in 2013, Justine Sacco, 30 years old and the senior director of corporate communications at IAC, began tweeting acerbic little jokes about the indignities of travel. There was one about a fellow passenger on the flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport:
Weird German Dude: Youre in First Class. Its 2014. Get some deodorant. Inner monologue as I inhale BO. Thank God for pharmaceuticals.
Then, during her layover at Heathrow:

Eh.
:)
This radish taste funny.
Does it taste pithy?
Why yes it does.
Makes sense, I saw a rabbit pith on it........
That joke is pith poor...
Exactly.
"Oh, well, that's different..."
Public shaming is what the NYT and Left are all about. See Palin and Cruz for examples.
The story is not about Twitter, it is about internet bullying. People do awful things online that they would not do in person.
Free Republic has become Twitter. Posts of more than 140 characters have become increasingly rare and most are just reactions to mindless chatter surrounding some vacuous thread. Even threads now come from social media sources commenting on rumors of an unknown source. Yesterday, we had a wild alarm, accompanied by hysterical rantings all started by a thread that quoted Twitter feeds from Iraqis claiming that ISIS had overrun Balad Air Base and captured 300 Marines. The days when such ludicrous stuff was stopped in its track within minutes by some Freeper who knew what was going on and could point to credible sources seems to be gone forever. Even when Freepers came forward with accurate reports, their voices went unheard in the frenzy of Twitter-length nonsense.
All that said, I don't have a Twitter account or a Facebook page for reasons that this article makes clear. What is a mystery is why I am still a monthly donor to Free Republic and continue to participate. Nostalgia, perhaps.
FR is an anonymous message board, very NOT social media.
A lot of people are looking for a lot of trouble. One of these days, they’re going to get it. You can NOT tell people what they can say or not say on their own time and get away with it indefinitely. This woman messed her own life up going after the other woman. How stupid.

I have no pedestrian means of discovering your identity.

The exception was the account of the big-eared, not-minding-her-own-business, feminist, who "overheard" the off color joke a man in an airport, was telling his friend.
She takes his picture, posts it, and then complain-es about being "offended", by the joke. (Never mind that the guy was not even talking to her).
He ends up getting fired over it, but then she gets fired because of the retaliation, after he posts about what she did .
Call that poetic justice.
Someone I knew (he’s passed away now) DID get warned by his work management that he HAD to curtail his activism here at FR.
Precisely.
Cheers,
‘Pod
