It what could be another milestone role in broadcast TV diversity, CBS has cast transgender actress Laverne Cox in its legal procedural pilot Doubt.
The Orange is the New Black actress will play a transgender Ivy League-educated attorney, described as competitive as she is compassionate. Shes fierce, funny and the fact that shes experienced injustice first hand makes her fight all the harder for her clients.
The Doubt role was always conceived as a transgender character, and its tough to imagine a better catch for the part Cox made the cover of Time magazine last year in a story about the transgender movement. While there have been plenty of transgender characters on broadcast TV shows in the past, they are often short-term parts or comedic roles.
The castings comes as shows with diverse leads are topping the Nielsen ratings. This season the most successful new drama in the adults 18-49 demo is Foxs hip-hop melodrama Empire, with ABCs legal soap How to Get Away with Murder also a hit. The highest-rated new comedy series if ABCs Black-ish. The push for diversity is impacting pilot season, too, with ABC confirming yesterday that its reboot of the 1989 film Uncle Buck will feature an all-black cast. “Shirley and Laverne?”
He, er, she is really good in Orange is the New Black. So there’s that.
That would be a hell of a dilemma, whether to stand or sit to pee, I think.
Years ago one season of ALI MCBEAL had one of the male characters dating a tranny. Wasn’t all over the news and media, character wasn’t “in your face”, just part of the quirkiness of that show. Don’t think they were trying to make a point. a fun show
Alessen Cox would have been a better name.
“Groundbreaking” would be a tranny actor playing a NON-tranny character.
Could someone please remind me why I’m supposed to care? Thank you.
So would Anita Bone.
I think it’s “Loving”..............
So shes Mrs Cox’s?
No doubt they will be doing everything possible to show this person to have moral character, wisdom, and compassion at a level somewhere between God and the Pope. Not one little character flaw or weakness shown here. Nope.
Isn’t that what he does on Orange? Or why is a man in a women’s prison? Never saw it and never will, so that could be wrong.
Black people.
It’s like men found a new way to keep women from working — by taking the female jobs from them.
I’ve never seen implants be that visible. Yuck!
This is just wrong. Ugh.
