A North Carolina officer shot dead a 74-year-old man whose concerned family had called the police and asked to check on him.
Officer Josh Lefevers arrived at the home of James Allen just before midnight on Sunday morning and announced he was entering the residence when Allen approached him with a handgun and refused to put it down, police said.
Lefevers then shot and killed him.

We have a tough, dangerous job.
Our brother cop did not get up that morning with the goal of becoming involved in an officer-involved shooting.
If you’re REALLY not up to no good you won’t mind me taking a look, right?
What, are you a hippy..?
Still mad about that ticket, 10 years ago..?
We’re just doing our jobs.
The key thing is for us to go home safely at the end of the shift.
Next time you have an emergency, just call the ACLU.
We have to make split second decisions youre being unfair.
Dont paint us all with the same broad brush.
I don’t think you understand just how highly we are trained.
Were the thin blue line, what, ya want anarchy..?
You must just be a cop hater.
New ones? Help me add to my list!
What ever happened to shoot to wound?
The $60,000 question is, did the old man hear it?
Shoot to wound is a Hollywood/libscum fantasy.
Ezekeal Emanuel’s magic #75 years! With any luck, such “welfare checks at midnight” will become official government healthcare benefits starting on your 74th birthday.
There was never such a thing, nor should there be.
If your life is in jeopardy you shoot to kill. If your life isn't in jeopardy, you DON'T shoot.
If it was just before midnight, wouldn’t it still be Saturday night?
Exactly right. Shows the mindset of some doesn't it.
Killin’s cheeper.
If I go to check on a 74 year old man, and upon entering his home he confronts me with a gun, well, I give up my ground, put my gun away, and my hands up and tell him that I am leaving.
Then I exit and try to sort the situation out.
I wonder what this guy did to make the cop kill him? Unless he seemed insane and about ready to shoot, then I would submit to his territorial demands under the condition that I had only come by to check on his health, and then contact the family to come talk to him.
Nobody shot a dog first? No grandkids handcuffed, kicked, and cursed at with death threats?
That Poodle could deliver a lethal bite, shooting it was justified.
My money is on grampa with a fat insurance policy and some of his kids have some fancy spending habits.
I don’t think I am paranoid but since all this terrorist threat-Black against White threat, I have placed a double action auto at both doors.
If someone is messing around my house at night, or even knocks when I am not expecting them, well I greet them with a pistol in my right hand.
The last two people I met under those circumstances turned out to be Black men with no good reason to be there. They made up some excuse and left. The strange thing is both of those were the first time in years that I have found a suspicious person, and both right after I prepared for them.
Now if a Cop comes in, he better identify himself very quickly because once I get back to my bedroom, I will come out with a short barrelled 12 gauge loaded with either buckshot or number 6 shot.
If he doesn’t identify himself or just points a gun at me, he is very likely to be shot and I am likely to get away with it.
I suppose someone had to kill him. now days, the surest way to get someone killed is to sic the law on them in the guise of “helping” them. Now, I would not call the police to my worst enemy. Hell, I would not call the police o Obama, as much as I despise him.
Mine also.
You just got fired? Don’t take it out on me or I’ll kill you.
