NEW YORK (AP) NBC News has assigned the head of its own investigative unit to look into statements that anchor Brian Williams made about his reporting in Iraq a dozen years ago, an episode that's ballooned into a full-blown credibility crisis for the network.
NBC News President Deborah Turness announced the probe in an internal memo on Friday. Williams has apologized for falsely saying on the air that he was in a helicopter hit by a rocket-propelled grenade while in Iraq in 2003, and Turness said Friday the anchor expressed his regrets to his colleagues for the impact the episode has had.
"As you would expect, we have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired," Turness wrote. "We're working on what the best next steps are."
Richard Esposito, who has worked at the New York Daily News, New York Newsday and ABC and is now at NBC, is leading the investigation.

It depends on whether the definition of the word honest means honest....to paraphrase another public liar, Billy "BJ" Clinton.
Trust Bust.. The Media...
Internal probe?
What size batteries does it use?
Dick Thornburgh is still around and at 82 he should be just about right to do a complete investigation like he did for Dan Rather... /S
To kick Williams out the door...they would need to have some graceful five-star character ready to enter. There presently is no such person within NBC. Maybe they could recruit someone within the recently terminated CNN staff or find someone ready to go within CBS or ABC.
If you ask me....this internal probe is mostly a time-delay thing while they go and search for the replacement guy/gal and hopefully get three months to work the deal.
The New Orleans/Katrina LIES are even bigger than the fake RPG one! However, NBC has NO ONE.....NO ONE to put in his place! Chuck Todd? He looks like a child molester with that goatee.
Batteries? It better be solar powered for sustainability.
Hey NBC, I heard Katie “corrupt” Courics daytime show was canceled. Just saying.
NBC? It’s Comcast.
Comcast has taken way too many liberties with Conservatives across the Country.
All you Comcast subscribers must speak up.

He should be right on track to become Sec. of State, followed by running for President.

I recall from my AF days...”What’s the difference between a Fairy Tale and a War Story??? A Fairy Tale starts with “Once Upon a Time” and a War Story starts with “No Sh*t this really happened” and that’s the only difference...
My oldest is a Marine Captain. In 2010 as a 2LT leading security on road construction projects in Sangin Province his small unit came under a night time RPG attack. Got a Navy Comm for repelling the attack, keeping his undermanned unit in control and calling in support. NEVER TALKS ABOUT IT - TO ANYONE. I had to read the citation. He says to me “don’t tell mom, I told her I just built roads”.
I despise liberals who generally hate the military but like to play make believe as if they have one ounce of the military’s courage.
Excellent!
NBC could save a lot of time and money by just paying you a few thousand bucks to write their conclusion.
what they are doing is looking for a black lesbian muslim that can read a teleprompter to take his place.
Yes, they’re huddling to find the least impact to them as a corporation. They’re also working on his news crew that never publically contradicted him. They’ll be threatened or bought off.
That entire company knew very early on about his BS lying and they chose to do nothing. They didn’t even order him to stop spreading the lie.
There really isn’t a problem with getting rid of him, unless these types of peoples’ contracts don’t contain moral turpitude clauses anymore.
Fire him and hope the rest of the news media doesn’t keep digging for “What did you know, and when did you know it?”
