Report: RadioShack to close all stores, sell half to Sprint

Radio Shack has been selling communication equipment since 1921, but according to Bloomberg, the retail chain will not be celebrating a 100th birthday. As part of a bankruptcy deal, RadioShack Corp. will be shutting down their entire chain of 7,000 tech stores, half of which will be reportedly sold to Sprint. According to the report, RadioShack locations that are sold to Sprint would operate under the wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist as a stand-alone retailer. RadioShack received a rescue financing package from Standard General LP in October, and the hedge fund would serve as the lead bidder in a filing and provide debtor-in-possession financing after filing, said the people. That would allow the investment firm to recoup some of the costs of the $535 million loan. Liquidating the stores also would let RadioShack avoid a battle with lenders over control of the company.

They have everything Radio Shack had and more. They just do not have as many stores since we are in the information age.

Radio Shack is way older than Fry’s too. So yes Fry’s is the new kid on the block.

You can order their items online.

When I go into a Fry’s my nipples get rock hard...

My first kit was a Radio Shack oscilloscope. All made from mil surplus components. Some stuff didn’t quite match what was supposed to be in the package - you had to be a bit creative.

rS should have gone all online only five to seven years ago. They’d probably still be around if they did.

I know exactly what Fry's is, and what Fry's isn't. It isn't Radio Shack. The near ubiquity of it's stores is what made Radio Shack "RADIO SHACK".

we are in the information age.

I'm really disgusted with buzz-phrases like "information age", "bricks-and-mortar", "paperless office", etc. They're a poor substitute for actual thinking.

There's no internet substitute for standing in front of a wall full of actual components, mentally working out how to make the device you need from the parts available. I could do that at Radio Shack (when it was RADIO SHACK, not so much lately). I can do that at Fry's but only when I'm in CA or NV. I can do that at Microcenter, but it's a PITA getting there.

And that's the problem. Rat Shack was EVERYWHERE.

I remember going with my Dad to the hardware store with a shoebox full of tubes from the TV, to test with one of those things. This would have been mid-60s.

Now where will I buy my resistors and capacitors?

Buy those at Digi-Key or Mouser at a fraction of the price and significantly better quality.

They had a tube tester at Graham Electronics in the Glendale Mall. Graham’s was the local version of Radio Shack before Radio Shack came to town and put them out of business. Same with Vonnegut’s.

So big fish eat little fish then die of indigestion is not a new thing. It is the natural order of things.

Probably to see where their customers are coming from to see if a store is better off opening elsewhere.

I’m lucky enough to have one of each about 10-12 miles away, about a mile apart.

But yes, you are correct.

Better hurry. I bought a new battery for my Seiko watch last week, and everything at my RS is 25% off, even sale prices.

Tandy computers were awesome for their time. We had them at the university doing lab projects and for doing statistics. Truly a revolution to not have to get in line for time on the campus mainframe. Later, Apples came along and then PCs. Tandy just didn’t understand the market had changed a lot in a short time. Tandy sold their computer division to AST and AST sold to Samsung.

Now where will I buy my resistors and capacitors?

Online, where the rest of us have been doing so for the past 15 years.
