When 16-year-old Gabi Finlayson went to Paris with her mother and brother in December, she only bought one thing: a light pink dress with lace overlay that fell just below the knee. She planned to wear it to an upcoming high school dance. I loved it, she tells Yahoo Parenting. It reminded me of Audrey Hepburn. It seemed like a classic dress I could wear forever.
So on Saturday night, the Utah high school junior couldnt wait to show up at the dance. Being a 16-year-old girl, its hard to find something that makes you feel pretty and when you do, you want to share it, she says. But instead of feeling like the belle of the ball, Finlayson ended up feeling shamed and embarrassed, she says, when she was asked to cover up her bare shoulders.

Gorgeous young woman and gorgeous, modest dress. The FOX news gals wear sleeveless dress all the time. I’m surprised some of our Freepers haven’t thought about posting a selection of some of the Walmart beauties as a comparison.
no particular reason ... I just don’t
that is a lovely dress on a lovely girl - time to take another look at the school dress codes.
That picture ruined my day. Thanks a lot......
Well, it’s Utah. “Community standards” do vary.
I have a daughter that was told to change what she was wearing in the past based on an arbitrary dress code. What she was wearing was completely acceptable and conservative, not the least be revealing. I was told to come to her school and bring different clothes or she could return to her classes. She didn’t moan. I didn’t moan. I verbally ripped the head of the principal and the teacher who sent my daughter to the principal. I also threatened them with a law suit. If you don’t stand up to petty fascism it goes into complete control over your life. Note that I wrote ‘fascism’. There are people on the right and left that are willing to control our lives and deprive us of our freedom and liberty. I am sorry that you are so weak.
This high school is in American Fork UT, halfway between Provo/Orem and Sandy and that's all you need to know about the kind of women volunteers they'd attract to be high school dance monitors.
They're nice people typically, but despite the fact they have cell phones and SUVs they're stuck in the 1890s. I'm sure some other students were sent home for not wearing socks with sandals or sent to detention for muttering 'phooey!' to themselves out on the athletic field after failing the high jump. Saying 'Gee Whiz!' is the same as cursing there, because everyone knows what you REALLY meant to say.
People from the next state over to my East are something else.
Are you Serious?!?
The young lady’s dress is classic, lovely on her and modest.
In Utah? I’m guessing some LDS elder thought she should have worn her “Mormon garment” underneath, which would have totally destroyed the lines of the dress.
It looks to me like she complied with the dress code. I see nothing wrong with her attire. The dress is nice and appropriate for her age.
Perhaps it wasn't the dress so much as the fact that she bought it in Paris?
How silly! I used to see girls come to school in STRAPLESS dresses back in 1961!
I dunno. That strap might be 1 3/4".
It’s fun to read the comments at Yahoo.
They actually allow non-lefty comments to remain and those usually far outnumber the loonies
Can’t see her tramp stamp or navel ring. Good to go.
Hovering mama is justifiably angry that her daughter was humiliated by school personnel at the door. I think the dress is modest and very fitting for a 16 year old at a school dance.
Besides being a pic of Mooch, its too dang BIG!
If a pic of the Wookie MUST be posted, then at least micro-size it.
It wouldn’t be if it weren’t for busy bodies and jealous wall flowers that can’t stand for some young lady to look beautiful and in a sane world very appropriate.
Nah, all their homes are decorated just like that. Like I said above, they're culturally stuck in the 1890s. I'll lay a dollar to a donut that almost every stick of furniture in that home is from RC Willey Home Furnishings. Believe me.
Go see what the Utah-based furniture store 'RC Willey' sells. Their slogan is "No matter what your style, we have a look for you!" --- Er, as long as your style is LDS that is.
