You Betcha I Was Wrong About Sarah Palin
Daily Beast ^ | 01/28/2015 | Matt Lewis

It’s time to admit that, whatever their motivation was at the time, the Alaska governor’s critics always had a point. Has conservative genuflection at the altar of Sarah Palin finally come to a halt?

In case you missed it, her speech in Iowa this week was not well received on the right. The Washington Examiner’s Byron York called it a “long, rambling, and at times barely coherent speech” and National Review’s Charles C.W. Cooke said she slipped into self-parody. And there’s more. The Examiner’s Eddie Scarry, for example, contacted several conservative bloggers who were once Palin fans, but have since moved on.

But here’s my question… what changed?

Yes, in 2008, Sarah Palin delivered one of the finest convention speeches I’ve ever heard (trust me, I was there), but she hasn’t exactly been channeling Winston Churchill ever since. Remember her big speech at CPAC a couple of years ago? You know, the one where she took a swig out of a Big Gulp and said of her husband Todd: “He’s got the rifle, I got the rack.” Not exactly a great moment in political rhetoric.

So why is anyone surprised when, this weekend, she said: “‘The Man,’ can only ride ya when your back is bent?”

Demosthenes, she is not, but there’s nothing new about Palin’s penchant for populism or lowbrow rhetoric. What does feel new is that she has finally gotten around to roundly losing conservative opinion leaders. (OK, this has been a long time coming. In 2011, Conor Friedersdorf noted that the hard right was skewering Palin, and that Kathleen Parker had been vindicated. And as recently as this past April, I wondered whether it was finally safe for conservatives to criticize her publicly.

This jerk is talking about MLK’s “lowbrow rhetoric”. What a dunce.

Elitist just can't stand people who talk in a down to earth straight shootin’; manner. You aren't going to reach the lower information voters by using high and mighty political rhetoric.

More people slllooowwwly realizing Palin is far more interested in building her brand (reality TV shows, books, paid speeches, etc) than actually running for office?

“But here’s my question… what changed?”

Well, I for one soured on her when she did the whole “maybe I’ll run/maybe I won’t run” dance in 2012. You don’t rent a giant tour bus and travel around the early primary states if you aren’t going to run, but she decided to pull that stunt for some reason I can’t fathom.

I did not see the Iowa speech. Can’t say I ever heard her say anything I could disagree with. Including the gun and rack comment.

Palin definitely has a role to play in terms of getting up-and-coming candidates some needed exposure. Several conservative officeholders owe their electoral success to Palin’s support.

when she did the whole “maybe I’ll run/maybe I won’t run” dance in 2012.

I still like her. However, I've seen a lot of Republicans do that, and it's never good. In 2008, with the big fiscal crisis, McCain was runnign for president, then he suspended the campaign, then he was running. Ross Perot -- on again, off again. It's not good.

I'm looking for a decisive leader. I still like Palin a lot, but if SHE isn't sure she should be president, it makes it hard for others to think she should be.

She flies through their night mares causing them to toss and turn, sitting up with a start. They can’t exorcise her from their consciousness and so have to take every cheap shot and low rent criticism they can.

Here should I run or not dance is simply self promoting her television show. New one coming soon. She has jumped the shark and needs to move on.

Not well received by who? It was a pretty good, informal, speech. Not a barn-burner, it wasn't intended to be.

And that's entirely good and honorable. She has a prominent place in political conversation and should continue to built on it.

Yep. Didn’t Van Jones admit that the DNC was worried after Palin's 2008 convention speech?

And they continue to read Sarah wrong.

Governor Palin is on an educational tour, rallying the troops not for her own run for office, but to spread the word that there is still an outside chance that we may be able to win back our country. She may or may not be the one to lead us back, but she can sure be a cheerleader for whoever does take that challenge.

Sarah Palin does not “ramble”, that effect is only in the minds of certain of the persons who claim to be listening to her. What she is doing, is building a word picture of “the way it is supposed to be”, and to a segment of people who claim to call themselves “conservative”, they are secretly afraid of the responsibility it puts upon THEM.

Grow up. Get out there and do the hard work it shall take to grab this locomotive by the headlight, wrest it around on the tracks, and sent it back in the RIGHT direction.

Palinization from Team Romney who also
TRASHED Sen. Thompson, the Speaker, etc. etc.

The same disgusting backstabbing that cursed America
with Obola.
