A double dose of snow makes its way toward NYC Driver miraculously survives pileup between two big rigs Motorists angry over alternative-side parking rules during snowfall New York braced for one of the biggest blizzards in the citys history, with over 24 inches of snow expected to blanket Gotham on Monday and Tuesday, authorities said.
We are facing one of the largest storms in the citys history, Mayor de Blasio said. This could be a storm the likes of which we have never seen before.
Snow is expected to begin falling just before sunrise on Monday before the serious blizzard kicks in late in the afternoon and through Tuesday mornings rush, forecasters said.
Garbage and recycling will be suspended Monday and Tuesday so New Yorks Strongest can put full efforts into clearing up to 36 inches of snow.

Several posters have commented on how forecast maps indicate that the heaviest snow will fall on the cities in the northeast. We're looking at twelve inches here in central Red Hampshire...since there isn't much on the ground at the moment; that will prove a blessing. It is the WIND that I fear will cause a power outage in my area...no heat, bummer.
I was in Queens from 75 to 77. I missed any big snow. I was very happy with that. :-)
In places like Minneapolis, it’s dumped in places next to or actually in the rivers. It’s kind of cool watching dump trucks drop loads of snow off a high bridge. I believe it’s done when necessary in the Northeast as well.
If your stomach is strong enough, you should read about how New York City sewage is handled. It's quite amazing how much...fecal matter...gets processed on a daily basis. Yet somehow, New York City has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world (that's probably the secret for the pizza tasking so good).
“OMG 2-4 inches per hour? Were all going to die!”
Not those of us that taking prepping seriously...even if we get LAUGHED AT.
They truck it right over the river, and dump it in.
Actually, I’ve never known NYers to get upset about blizzards. We live in an area prone to snow storms every year. Now, if you really want to see panic, try London with an inch or two of snow. Or Los Angeles when it rains.
So, is Chris Christie out of state now?
A bigger problem for NYC with this storm is that we're supposed to get some very cold temperatures for a while afterward. This means snow won't melt very soon, and one of the top priorities after the streets are plowed is to have fire hydrants dug out of snowdrifts. That usually takes several days under the best conditions.
“I like the way its not going through Virginia, but is just hitting the NE states- where people know how to drive in the snow...”
I like that, too, cuz my a** is in Virginia.
There’s something tickling my memory about dumping it in the river and using barges too, couldn’t clear it fast enough?, but it’s been awhile ago and I just can’t recall. Darn it!
In November up here in the UP of Michigan we had 36 inches of snowfall in one day. It was the wet heavy stuff though = snowblower attachment broke 6 shear pins cleaning out the snow. Took a couple of days for the area to be cleaned out by county and city crews as it was the starting of deer hunting season. deer hunting season was hampered by the snowfall, lower number of deer harvested. I did not have a lower number of deer harvested nailed two deer from November 15 - Dec 23 with the car.
I'm a civil engineer by trade, and I've seen how sewage gets treated in some of the areas around NYC. Yes, it's not for the weak stomach. LOL.
Not to worry folks. The hookers and drug dealers have offered assurances that they will be working despite the snow.
Forgot about the fire hydrants. Haven’t lived in a city for awhile. A large snowfall can be very dangerous in high population areas. People simply don’t realize what NYC is like.
It’s weird but I was going to say the storm I remember was in 1977. Then another one in the 80s and in the mid 90s, we had one year where it snowed every week from January through April. Unlike the fantasies propagated on FR, New Yorkers generally cope quite nicely with snowstorms. It’s the mayors who screw up.
And they rack up the OT doing it.
They need to have a special rig for their dump trucks. The garbage trucks can drive up to a dumpster, pick it up and over the cab and dump it in the back.
With a big bucket on the front, their dump trucks could travel down the street, self load, and then go dump it in the river.
As you probably know, it’s considered touristy and tacky to buy bottled water in restaurants in NYC!
I was in NYC when it got 28” of snow. I think it was eight years ago. We were there for the Westminster Kennel club show at the Garden. We stayed directly across the street at Hotel Pennsylvania. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon. By that evening it was coming down hard. The next morning, nothing was moving except the subways. Penn Station was right across the street. We went to the museum of Natural History the next day.
By Monday morning every time you tried to step off a sidewalk you had to slop through a three foot puddle of SLUSH. Our son was only eight at the time. It was his first trip to the big city.
