Donald Trump says Ted Cruz’s Canadian birth “could be a difficult problem” for 2016 bid
The Dallas Morning News ^ | January 23, 2015 | Todd J. Gillman

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Billionaire Donald Trump, the most prominent “birther” to question Barack Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, asserted Friday that Sen. Ted Cruz must clear up legal doubts about his own eligibility due to his birth outside the United States.

“It’s a problem. It could be a difficult problem, but he admits that he was born in Canada,” Trump told reporters in Iowa on the eve of the first major gathering of 2016 presidential hopefuls.

“He’s a friend of mine. I have great respect for him. But …certainly it’s a stumbling block and he’s going to have to have it solved before he goes too far,” Trump said.

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, on Dec. 22, 1970, while his parents worked in the Canadian oil patch. His mother is a native-born American. His father, a Cuban émigré who later became a naturalized American, was still a Cuban citizen at the time.

Cruz’s birth in Canada was never a secret. But it has proven a political liability, with detractors occasionally taunting him as “Canadian Ted,” and critics suggesting that his birth outside the United States makes him ineligible to run for president.

In August 2013, The Dallas Morning News reported that the circumstances of his birth made him both a Canadian and an American. The dual citizenship came as a surprise to Cruz and his parents, and the senator quickly vowed to shed his Canadian citizenship. That became official last June.

For Trump, that’s not yet good enough if Cruz wants to run for and become president....

Time will tell. I don't believe Mitch and company in the Gop-e would not use this point of contention to there advantage either directly or by surrogate to win the outcome they would prefer, let alone the DNC.

As I understand it, Cruz meets the requirements. You don’t have to be born on US territory, if you are the child of a one parent who is a US citizen.

A citizen at birth is not the same as a natural born citizen. But hey, the pronoun word "citizen" is in there so it all must mean the same thing.

The Constitution simply says he must be a “Natural Born Citizen”.

That is all natural born means, there is no extra special definition, no there’s not, I don’t care what you heard on some blog or from some radio host.

Heh. I've been fighting this battle here for years. Glad at least one FReeper agrees with me.

The failure to enforce the NBC requirement has rendered it, de facto, irrelevant. Doesn’t make it right. Just makes it so.

Correct. Now, define “Natural Born Citizen”.
There’s the rub.

I’ll get out the Popcorn and keep an eye on this Thread, just like the many that cam before it...

Birther stuff was always nonsense.

No, it hasn't. And a cut-and-paste .pdf is not a birth certificate.

I agree the Birth Certificate seemed faked.

See my earlier post on that.

(Donald Trump says Ted Cruz’s Canadian birth “could be a difficult problem” for 2016 bid)

Oh, did we start using the Constitution again? It's hard now to keep up with when exactly it is kosher to use the document as a basis to run the country. Maybe we need some sort of website that tells us all when it is in play.

. ....... he was born in Kenya, and therefore not eligible. This must have been important to some people because he ultimately released a purported BC from Hawaii. If the place of his birth was in fact meaningless, why did he do that?....

I will not caution you again. This sort of thread is no place for logic! Logic disrupts the flow of the various myths and hearsay being floated by the well-meaning, including of course, myself.... and by the trolls of Team Obama.

I feel (all I can go on, since the somnolent Black-Robed Buggers who presently infest the high bench of the SCOTUS cannot be bothered to accept the case) that "place of birth" now seems a moot point. Apparently having one American citizen parent, whether legitimately married or not to another person of any citizenship, suffices to provide Natural Born Citizenship, no matter the locale.

Actually, Cruz Sr had already naturalized as a Canadian at that time.

Not that it really makes any difference to the question at hand.... but I was always curious about that.

The Donald needs to understand that if you are born an American, you were natural born. No matter where you were born.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria to two Austrian parents. Clearly not natural born.

John McCain, born to two Americans (his father serving his country in the navy) in Panama: clearly born American.

Ted Cruz, born to one American and one foreigner, in Canada, clearly American at birth. Natural born.

One of my grandfathers was born in Canada to two European parents. Not American at birth.

And good old Barry? Born somewhere, probably also Canada, to a foreigner and an American mom so young she didn’t have the power to pass on her american citizenship. Not a citizen at all.

Obama was always born a citizen because of his mother.

maybe some birther stuff was nonsense, but for real, in 1961, IF Stanley Anne had Barack in an unwed mom’s home over the border from her high school in Seattle, like a lot of pregnant girls did at the time, she was not old enough to confer citizenship onto him.

The law then was something like you can’t give your citizenship to offspring until you’ve lived in the USA for 5 years after age 15 and she was only 17.
There is no real birth certificate or evidence he was really born in Hawaii. Stanley anne showed up with newborn Barry in Seattle not even knowing how to change his diaper.

There is no evidence she was together with Barack senior much after the making of said child. She was only at the university for a couple of months as a very young freshman before she got knocked up by the african married man. Her friends were all back in Seattle. Hmmm.

“I had my health director, who is a physician by background, go personally view the birth certificate in the birth records of the Department of Health, and we issued a news release at that time saying that the president was, in fact, born at Kapi’olani Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. And that’s just a fact.
It’s been established. He was born here.”—Governor Linda Lingle (R-HI).

Nineteen court decisions have ruled that Barack Obama qualifies as a natural born citizen.

Refusing to consider a case because no one has standing is hardly a decision, more like a refusal to make one.
