Measles Outbreak That Started In California Expanding
CBS Baltimore ^ | January 22, 2015 | Christie Ileto

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A health warning. The extremely contagious measles virus is back. An outbreak that started at Disneyland is starting to sweep the country.

Christie Ileto has the push for children to get vaccinated.

Measles was thought to have been eliminated in the U.S. 15 years ago. Now its back, targeting those who haven’t been immunized.

The outbreak that started in California’s Disneyland is expanding. At least 75 cases of measles span six states.

“It’s scary to think the happiest place on Earth is infected with measles,” one Disney employee said.

For this Disney employee, knowing co-workers are infected is cause for concern.

Measles has a 21-day incubation period, meaning people  can travel far before they know they’re sick.

“We’re seeing the resurgence of measles because a lot of the parents are not getting their children vaccinated,” said Dr. Peter Andrews, Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Andrews says that problem is prime. In Maryland, all students K-12 must get two shots of the measles vaccine.

“It just didn’t make sense to me,” said one Annapolis mom.

In a revealing interview with WJZ, an Annapolis mom explained why she didn’t vaccinate her kids.

“I didn’t understand why a little human had to get so many drugs at one time,” she said.

Still, the vaccine proves very effective if given at two doses.

Doctors say the virus is highly contagious. For instance, if someone has the measles and doesn’t cover their mouth when they sneeze, they can pass it on to anyone standing nearby.

Symptoms like fever, cough and rash soon follow.

“The younger, the older, the immune compromised. Those are the three target areas that really can get sick and die,” said Dr. Andrews.

Most people who have already had the measles or got the vaccine are not at risk.

We are not saying you don’t have a right to protect your kids if you determine that that is acceptable for you to do.

We are saying if you’re “protected” why worry about getting it - you’re protected, no?

We are saying let others determine if they want to take the risk. There is always risk, and to say there isn’t denies the people’damaged and killed by vaccines. It happens.

If you want tovtake the risk fine. Let’others decide for themselves just like you did. They may not agree it’s worth the risk for them.

Oh my god! They bought it into the country along with many other diseases. Part of the obama plan to annihilate America when we need to annihilate crazy terrorists.

But hey give them SS benefits and make our Veterans wait the year.

if they are vaccinated with their magic formula that never hurts anyone and always gives 100% immunity, what the hell are you worried about?

Sadly, I have to agree. I may not like it, but it is the truth.

Then you have these little non-vaccinated children spreading it around to other non-vaccinated kids.

Wonderful... /s

so that must mean that the demographic of people coming here can’t have vaccination rates any less than that? great assumption.

And yet we had eliminated measles and polio in this nation.

I wonder how that happened?

Perhaps you could enlighten us.

All of Central America have vaccination rates above 89%.

Not according to some info. It's 85% in Guatamala but when I was looking this up, I also found a study of Honduras where they said the rural areas did not have as high a % rate as WHO says they do. Honduras is 89% (they say). Those 60,000 kids that came thru Mexico, alot were from Honduras and Guatamala. At any rate, it was non-existent here for a long while because everyone used to vaccinate their kids.

Chagas has become a serious problem and they’ve traced it to illegals. Never used to hardly see it’and ever since the illegal kids were brought in, where it’s’cropped up coincidentally is where illegfal kids were bussed in/housed.

And of course if these little “protected by their parents” (not the vaccine) kids happen to contract the disease and infect other kids, that’s okay. Right?

I mean who cares if the contract polio, measles, and a myriad of other diseases. And if they then infect other children, hey, thems the breaks!

Your decisions effect other people.

My uncle had polio. He was severely damaged for the rest of his life. If that’s what you want for your kids, you really don’t know much about this topic.

What about the 9% of American kids that are not vaccinated?

Are their Measles not infectious?

The point being that kids not being vaccinated is a problem everywhere.

All nations in Central and South America have vaccination rates above 89%.

Don't want to be a nitpicker but Guatamala is 85% :) And that's just Central America, haven't checked S America.

I was responding to the notion that illegals were spreading measles to American. The new measles epidemic is very much a home grown phenomenon.

And Venezuela claims 85% too. Can’t imagine a country that doesn’t have any food or diapers or toilet paper on their shelves would have 85% measles vaccination but good for them!

In Mexico, 89% of kids are vaccinated for Measles.

What about Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala where most of the children have come from?

And Nicaragua is 99%.

I have been to Guatemala and their rates should be far above 85% but America is nothing like Guatemala and our rates should be 99%.
