Millionaire cybersecurity expert missing as Maryland mansion burned to rubble
The Washington Times ^ | January 19, 2015 | Phillip Swarts

An executive at ScienceLogic, a company used to monitor the online networks of the FBI and the Department of Defense, among others, were missing Monday after a four-alarm fire destroyed his 16,000-square-foot Annapolis home.

Don Pyle, the chief operating officer at the Reston-based technology provider, and his wife Sandy, couldn’t be located, authorities said Monday. It took 85 firefighters nearly three-and-a-half hours to get the blaze under control and firefighters had yet to set foot inside the building, uncertain about its integrity, Monday afternoon.

Neighbors told The Washington Times the Pyles’ grandchildren may have been staying with them for the long holiday weekend. Mr. Pyle’s family confirmed they believed six people were unaccounted for, but did not give any indication of ages or whether any of the children were missing. Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies said the family had been to view the scene of the fire Monday morning.

Arson hasn’t been ruled out, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been called in to investigate.

ScienceLogic has multiple contracts with government agencies, and is best known for its software that scans online networks to ensure they run efficiently. Before joining the firm in October, Mr. Pyle, 55, served as the chief executive officer of several other information technology companies. He was CEO at Netcordia, an IT company the National Security Agency and U.S. Army contracted with to manage their online networks, and Laurel Networks, which specializes in routers for telecommunications clients.

“There was a fire at his home last night and the case is under investigation,” said ScienceLogic representative Yama Habibzai, who declined further comment.

If the house was built in the last 5 years it would have been required by MD law to have fire sprinklers. It still should have had smoke and heat detectors that should have alerted the family and with a house this size I can't imagine that it didn't have the Fire Alarm with an automatic dialer to the Fire Dept.

I just don’t get. How does a house that big go so fast and so hot that no one gets out. If gas,or propane was involved—wouldn’t there have been an explosion? Yet none was reporated and it was the security company that called it in.

The fire spread throughout the hour very fast. It looked like a lot of other fires I’ve seen in the US and UK where the father has had a huge financial setback. He kills his family and burns down the house.

He could have caught suiciditis from a banker.

I think by the reports the place blew up. apartment building next to me at 3rd and arch became a torch in seconds. luckily no one died. arson via union. do government required safety standards actually work? i doubt it. but heh heh actually in philly the fathers required brick’s for houses. saved some major fires that occurred in other cities . now every house has a natural fire chain of tar that bleeds over every row house roof. Union workers don’t you know.

If final report / evidence indicates arson, then this tragic incident oughta be included in Nachum’s Obola dead pool list.”

You could smell that fire burning all over Annapolis. The pictures of the house fully ablaze sure look like arson

My theory is that the grandparents were desperately looking for their grandchildren who out of fear may have hidden in closets.

Also, thick smoke makes it almost impossible to see.

The terrifying accounts of spousal murder/suicide does not fit this incident. This couple were grandparents.

The most likely scenario is a gas leak which rendered the family unconscious - thereafter some other malfunction caused the fire.

The wiring and other installations in this massive building must have been very complicated - and apparently not up to code.

I think America entered a dangerous new phase after the Nov elections. They’re playing hardball now. You can call me a conspiracy nut, but I think time grows very short.

Minor point: the Grandchildren were visiting the parents.

The parents were not in the house when the fire occured. . .

You guys certainly can come up with some doozies. If it’s suspicious, it’s probably a lot less sexy than you’re thinking. The couple’s sons are mixed up with booze and drugs. I’m guessing the fire was set to cover up another crime. The four grandkids don’t make sense though. Maybe it just got out of control.

One thing I was wondering about - given he’s in security (albeit cyber), one would think with a house that large it would have had all the best bells and whistles wrt fire alarms, sprinkler systems, etc.
