This Is the Scary Amount of Pizza Kids Are Really Eating [Food Nazis]
Time ^ | 1/19/15 | Alexandra Sifferlin

....researchers looked at the diets of children ages 2 to 11 and teens aged 12 to 19 from 2003-2010. They found that pizza makes up about 20% of kids’ daily calories on days when they eat pizza—and despite the insistence of some politicians that pizza should be considered a vegetable for its ample tomato sauce, those calories aren’t coming from an onslaught of veggies.....

I don’t know what “Big Y” is; we have a Mexican pizzeria nearby with larger pies (even their boxes are noticeably larger) and better prices, but they’ve been increasing the prices recently. The pizza is OK, but spicier than Americans would be accustomed to; the area itself is flooded with pizzerias. At one intersection on a main street, one can see a Papa Johns, a family pizzeria, and the one from the “Sopranos” - they are within two blocks of each other. It was worse when I was younger; now some have become South American fast food places (for South American customers - the menus are written in, and staff only speak, Spanish).

What's really scary is that in the Standard American diet, added sugars and industrial seed oils make up more than 40% of calories.

And that it's been our professional health organizations like the American Heart Association that's been telling us that replacing natural animal fats with sugar and industrial seed oils is good for us.

No way. Tried it on the side-—not as lip-smackin’ good.

Sound like you need to upgrade your pizza.

The cheese binds me up anymore ... won’t go for two days ... and I LOVE pizza cheese

Metamucil helps some, but humans really have to stop eating that stuff by age 30. Your body is loudly saying "no!" :)

None of the kids were obese because back in the day mom opened the door after breakfast and said, “be home for lunch.” Back in the day we were allowed and it was normal for a kid to walk around the block by themselves. We were out in the street playing kick the can, half ball, hide and seek, you name it. There were very few obese kids when I grew up. Sure they had a few kid programs on tv, popeye, superman, mickey mouse but after those we were out and about. Now a days even small kids are inside playing their video games or whatever sitting on their butt. We were rarely inside.

My kids have PB&J pretty much all of the time as well; thankfully they don’t find the school lunches appealing because I wouldn’t want to pay for them anyway. We occasionally mix t up with Nutella or salami, but since one got braces the salami doesn’t happen anymore.

When I was younger the pizza served in school was basically Ellios (1/3 of a slab).

Drank the diet cool aid, huh?

The national health scare is just one more reason for giving control of children’s lunches, what goes in your food, labeling, etc. to the government.

You could not distinguish the difference between a person dead on the US Average BMI and that of any of our genetically similar European counterparts.

Americans are healthier than they have ever been. Life expectancy is the longest it has ever been.

Pizza, especially with vegetable toppings, is actually quite nutritious, according to my middle school science teacher. Of course, that was 30 years ago.

All true

But it is not a reason for anyone but parents to decide what their kids eat.

Bread, cheese, tomato sauce, additional meat and veggies to taste, a little oil

That's a nutritious, well balanced meal.

Liz,

back away from the pizza

what you tell us is pure blasphemy...what is this magic you speak of?

The natural order of cosmos relies upon the simple fact that cheese, sauce and peps constitute what is all good and pure in this realm

to suggest otherwise is plain sorcery, and leads down a dark path

repent ye sinner

Built teepees with my granddaughter. At age three, there we were...on a deerskin...sitting in our teepee. When I asked her what she wanted for lunch...Yup....pizza...LMAO

None of the kids I remember being obese. A couple chubby but none real obese.

That's because unlike the generation being raised by helicopter parents, we had to walk everywhere.

No kool aid just observation. There are obese people all around. I don’t believe in the BMI. People are getting fat everywhere. Longer lifespans are due to pills and treatments not healthier lifestyles.
