New York State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, known for showing her claws against animal cruelty, is pouncing on a new topic: cat declawing.
Rosenthal, who represents district 67, mainly covering Manhattan's Upper West Side, has penned a bill that would ban removing cats' claws unless necessary for medical reasons, the New York Daily News reports.
The bill has not yet been introduced to the state Senate, but it has been backed by the Humane Society of New York.
"Too often, people think that declawing is a simple surgery that removes a cat's nails—the equivalent of having your fingernails trimmed. Sadly, this is far from the truth," the Humane Society says on its website. "Declawing traditionally involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle."
The Paw Project, a non-profit dedicated to educating the public about the effects of declawing, is also behind it. The group has successfully led campaigns to make declawing illegal in cities across California, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in 2014 helped get a law in Rhode Island enacted to prohibit landlords from requiring tenants to declaw their pets.
If Rosenthal's bill is enacted, New York would be the first in the country to introduce a state-wide ban on the practice.
Rosenthal's previous efforts include fighting to extend orders of protection to domestic animals and limiting cosmetic testing on animals. Just last month, her bill banning pet tattoos and piercings was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Boy this is difficult. I trim my cats nails once a month rather than mutilating her feet.

I don’t favor having my cat’s toes cut off but I’ll have to have it done soon. She shredded my old furniture and is well on her way to shredding my new overstuffed leather furniture. She also attacks and claws visitors including my daughter. I’ll be moving in with her in a few months and have to get it done before then.
I have one that was de-clawed when I found her at the shelter.
Her ears were already chewed up, but she is an indoor cat now, and does just fine in dealing with my other male cat who has claws.
She rubs her feet on the scratching post in a real fast funny manner.
She has a wicked hiss and scares him so bad he never even thinks about messing with her.
Claws are the cats defense, and we are just lucky the male is just a gentle sweet retarded cat.

I don't know where you get that information from, years ago I was a supporter of declawing of cats but now I'm opposed to it.
At no time ever was I a supporter of abortion............

It’s the amputation of all the tips of their fingers and it IS cruel. I have an old cat that I adopted 6 years ago that had been declawed at some point. She is 15 now, and is in constant pain in her front paws, she limps and is constantly shaking first one front paw, then the other.
Doubt it.
Hmm.
You might consider taking your cat to the vet. And have her put to sleep.
Or take it to a shelter and let come what may.
If your cat is not trained now and has unfriendly unsocial behavoir, then just wait till after you declaw it.
If you think my two options are very upsetting - wait till you see what declawing does to her. As well as moving.

If you have a cat that you choose to allow to roam the neighborhood without a license that dogs are required to have, don't be surprised that one day your feline friend never returns home in the morning.
It was either run over by a car, taken in by a classic cat lady who already has two dozen cats in her house, or trapped by me.
If trapped by me then I'll either drop it off at the local animal shelter where it will likely be put down within a couple of days or you can find it about 10 miles north in a wooded area where I dropped it off.......
The only reason I trapped your cat was because it kept coming onto my back deck at about 2:00 a.m and caused my indoor cat to go ballistic........I don't like being waken up by the sounds of cat howling........
God bless you sir, We had a cat that was wild before we had rescued him he passed recently best and sweetest cat we had ever seen in our life. So good he would let the groomer groom him let us give him a bath (just whined a little but was cooperative) He started scratching furniture) we just gave him a old chair sprayed with catnip and sprayed the rest with some anti cat claw spray and trained him and worked great he eventually got use to the cat scratching toys my mom made him a homemade scratch post too that was more natural. The cat even warned us when their was a tornado siren going off at night actually before then went under the table.
I tried to train her not to claw the furniture with a squirt gun. She thought it was a game. If she wants to be petted she wants it NOW. If not she grabs your hand with her claws and pulls it to her. Yesterday for some reason she clawed my daughter twice, set back and growled.
She’s not mean all the time. When I watch TV she lays on my lap and watches until she falls asleep. At night she stretches out beside me in bed and sleeps.
Claw removal should be a death penalty offense.
Have you tried anti claw spray? Claw cap things? Cat scratch posts ?
I’m obviously late to this party, but FWIW:
I do not declaw, first and foremost, because cats will get outside and must have a method of self-defense. I also personally believe it’s a — “cruel” seems too strong a word, but a “drastic” procedure that I’m uncomfortable with. There’s no question it changes a cat’s personality and behavior.
That said, I know many, many declawed kittehs who have wonderful, loving owners. And to equate declawing to the murder of pre-born infants is reprehensible.

With a handle like yours you'd seem like a cool person, but that comment is wicked. Your handle could've been mine not so long ago. I had a dog, a beautiful bull terrier, who passed over a year ago. I also have 5 cats, all naturally, happily clawed. Declawing a beloved family pet so that your furniture doesn't get scratched is vanity. It's like buying a white carpet and white couches and then having children and not letting them leave their rooms for fear they'll muss up the house. Cats like to scratch things and dogs will bark and little children make messes. C'est la vie.
Isn’t there more important things that they need to focus on?
