A middle school principal in eastern Alabama wants to stockpile cans of food such as corn and peas in classrooms so that students could hurl them as weapons in a last-resort confrontation with a school intruder.
In a letter Friday, W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscella Holley asked parents to have each student bring an 8-ounce canned item.
"We realize at first this may seem odd; however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off guard," she wrote in the letter, published by TV station WHNT in Huntsville.
"The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive," Holley wrote. "The canned food item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters their classroom."
The school is in Valley, Alabama, part of the Chambers County school system.
The letter was sent after school employees received training from Auburn University's Department of Public Safety, Chambers County Schools Superintendent Kelli Hodge told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.

a can inside of a tube sock is nice weapon to beat someone with, so maybe they should bring one of dads socks from home just in case the crap hits the fan...and on another note ...this society is doomed
1) Throw can at assailant
2) Get shot in the face by assailant
3) Throw second can, if able.
In an extended threat period, the kids will be issued can holsters.
Thinking outside the box is not always a good idea.
Let me see if I understand this correctly - Bring a knife to school, get expelled. Wear a shirt with a grenade, expulsion. Even pointing your finger at someone and going bang is reason for expulsion. Having a toy shaped like a gun on a keychain, less than an inch long, is also reason for expulsion. Yet this guy requests every child in the school bring an object that is intended to be used as a weapon?
Shouldn’t the zero tolerance policy apply, and every child who brings a can of food be summarily expelled for bringing a weapon onto school grounds?
I wonder if I bring a can with a black label, will it be consider a “military style assault” can?
Yeah, something like a smaller can... made out of metal, but can travel faster...
They should instigate practice, then, at PE. “Today we are going to practice hurling 8 oz cans at targets. There will be prizes. Those who cannot yet do this, please practice at home. We will do 5’, 10’, and 20’ practices.”
What is that saying? “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.”
Stupid. Typical liberal’s approach to self-defense. Why not throw rocks? That’d be as good as corn. Anyone ever try rocks before? No. Because it’s stupid. Second Amendment: ...shall not infringe the right of the people to keep and bear cans of corn. Stupid. The Framers were not stupid. Young kids should have armed teachers to defend them. Older kids should be armed themselves, though I’m not sure at what age society should allow it. Certainly by 17 most are ready, imo.
Brass cans full of lead and some dusty stuff...
‘Running and throwing cans gives them a sense of empowerment.” From the article. May I add, ‘A FALSE sense of empowerment.’
8 oz. can? That’s not even a normal can size. That’s like a small tomato sauce can size. Guess we just want to disorient the intruder, not hurt him, so can’t use a 15 oz. can. Or maybe kids today are so wimpy they can’t throw a 15 oz. can.
You caught him by surprise, maybe even hurt him a little. Now he's full of adrenaline, maybe a little scared but mostly pissed off.
He's still armed and ready to shoot at anything that moves. You gave away your position when you stood up to throw, no way you can hide, and you're out of ammo.
And the cops are still 19 1/2 minutes away.

2) 1 Bic lighter
Problem solved!
Same training I had (ALICE training). One stat they gave us is that in an active shoot situation the police only hit the perp with about 20% of the rounds fired; the school shooter average is 80%. Police are usually trying to hit a moving target at a distance, school shooters shoot from an average of 18 inches at a still target. A last resort, if a shooter has breached the door, is throwing things and running away. Bad things are still going to happen but the numbers will be lower.
More importantly, where can we put them?
A shotgun would probably catch the intruder off guard as well.
Next lesson: Girls will be taught to pee in their pants to stop rape.
