I’ve had “Active Shooter” training from my local police. This program was to teach office workers what to do in the event of an active shooter. Believe it or not, throwing things was a strategy of last resort. Obviously getting out quickly is the best. Hiding without being found is next. But once found, throw everything you’ve got.

Same training I had (ALICE training). One stat they gave us is that in an active shoot situation the police only hit the perp with about 20% of the rounds fired; the school shooter average is 80%. Police are usually trying to hit a moving target at a distance, school shooters shoot from an average of 18 inches at a still target. A last resort, if a shooter has breached the door, is throwing things and running away. Bad things are still going to happen but the numbers will be lower.

We were told if our hiding place was compromised prepare to fight until the shooter is incapacitated. Throwing things distracts the shooter. Pounding a fire extinguisher into his skull incapacitates him. Whatever you do, commit 100% to your plan.

I've had this "training", too. It's a shame we silly civilians/peasants aren't competent enough to be trained to shoot back as a first resort.
