I suspect that the news writers are expected to have at least a middle school graduation certificate unless granted a minority advanced placement exemption.
Well, look at his picture. He’s obviously an African-American. You get into this nuttiness with language when you are dedicated to remaining PC at all costs.
That is the term I use. I long ago gave up using the ever changing “accepted” term.
Liberals know a person's nationality by Liberals' own skin color? That ambiguity is inherent in PC warping of English. A singular noun takes a singular pronomial possessive in real sensible English.

Same with a good friend of mine from the National Guard - he met his wife while traveling thru Europe (France ironically) and after a long distance courtship got married. You can imagine the paperwork he had to fill out once he got married so he checked off all of the “African American” boxes as she got her USA citizenship before the wedding. Although I knew what he was doing - you should have seen the looks they got when they attended the first social gathering together!
A friend who is a history teacher with wavy hair and blue eyes got into a discussion with a couple of his Negro students who were spouting off about the superiority of Africa and its culture and he asked them how they knew? had they lived their? One replied that well, he was himself African. Mark then told the purely locally born and raised kid that he, Mark, was more African than the kid could ever be. The kid challenged him because Mark is white. Mark explained that he was born in Ethiopia (now Eritrea) and had grown up there while the kid had not been fifty miles from his home in Florida. The kid was properly awed. Marks parents were missionaries who themselves had lived many years in Ethiopia. Mark now says he is an African American.

It does do that to people but apparently it also makes them FEEL AS IF they are super geniuses. It’s bad to be a fool but to be a fool and think you are the smartest guy in the room is really guaranteed to cause a problem.
