Pro-Choice Mario Cuomo Was Still A Catholic Politician

People across the nation are mourning the death of Mario Cuomo, the passionate Italian-American Catholic who served as the governor of New York from 1983-1994.

Cuomo’s political career was deeply formed by his Catholic faith. During his famous 1984 speech at the University of Notre Dame, he said as much: “The Catholic Church is my spiritual home. My heart is there, and my hope.”

But Cuomo’s relationship with the Church in the United States, particularly its bishops, was at times strained, especially over the issue of legalized abortion. At Notre Dame and elsewhere, Cuomo maintained that -SNIP-

Absurd. He was an apostate.

I do not want to pick on a dead man, but Cuomo was more like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. (Matt 23:27). As is his son today.

I pray for the soul of Cuomo and the repentance of his wayward son.

For all the deaths of children he voted to fund, I’m sure he’s enjoying a hot time in hell at this moment. Catholic in name only.

A pro-abortion “Catholic” from a pro-abortion “Catholic” organization funded by Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Soros, writes a pro-abortion article praising a pro-abortion nominal “Catholic.”

These people aren’t fooling anybody, not even themselves. Putting out this pious-sounding sewage is just part of the theater.

Thing is, the Catholic Church, before the creation of national bishops’ conferences by Paul VI, WAS very decentralized. The local bishop answered to no one in Washington, and communication with Rome was infrequent, and in Latin! So letters were not only infrequent, but short!

A friend of mine was an Episcopal priest for about fifteen years. He became a Catholic, and about five years later, was ordained a priest. He commented to me on the many differences: After his first meeting with parishioners about some issue or other, he said he could not BELIEVE how Catholics talk to their priests! He said, “Episcopalians wouldn’t DARE.”

As for living in luxury: Most rectories are dumps. Even SOME bishops’ houses are dumps. And outside of rich countries, ALL rectories and bishops’ houses are dumps.

It's not a criticism, mind you, just an observation that people prefer to surround themselves with what's familiar to them.

Interesting observation! ...may have legs.

My take is that there is a basic lack of commitment among Catholics to the teachings of the Church. Americans apparently are putting more faith in society's values than they do in the Church's values.

America has legalized abortion and promoted birth control as a positive and effective way to eliminate problems that may stem from unexpected pregnancy. Sexual standards have loosened.

Legalization of birth control and abortion in America have expanded to include same sex marriage, harvesting of aborted babies for stem cell research, three-parent children.

In addition the church is struggling with couples living together without guilt and without the benefit of the sacrament of marriage, how to deal with the offspring and parents of same sex marriage, rogue churches, and gross misuse of “social justice” that supports socialism and Marxism, not to mention rampant corruption.

Jesus urged His followers to be in the world, but not of the world.

"It’s not too late for the RCC to excommunicate Cuomo."

Not necessary. He excommunicated himself by his actions long ago. Non-catholics don't understand that excommunication does not need some or other piece of paper from some or other bishop to be a reality. A guy like Cuomo can continue to call himself Catholic, attend church every Sunday, but all he is doing is toting up a bunch of new sins.

"Some time ago I put forth the idea that most American Catholics prefer their government to more closely resemble their church: Power concentrated at the top, hierarchical, bureaucratic, and they don't mind their politicians to be rich and living in luxury the same as many of their religious leaders."

Your understanding of RC teachings is wrong. The term used formally is "subsidiarity", and teaches EXACTLY the structure you posit that Protestants embrace as the ideal arrangement for governance.

This is a misconception. Gallup did an extensive study on American Catholics (or those who identify as Catholic, anyway) and found that Catholics the nation's average in virtually every economic and education Category.

I am refering to the early Catholic families who came over here and started living in this country. Their descendants were indoctrinated by older family members into voting democrat, and to this day that is the way they still vote.- Tom

Pretty sure you aren’t a Catholic anymore. It’s NOT like being Jewish.

According to a Catholic Freeper, once a Catholic, always a Catholic. Although, I disagree with that.

“Why do so many Catholics support the Democrats?”

Because so many of them need proof of the ascension and see a ready Democrat/Progressive messiah every election cycle.

(Membership in the Democrat Party makes one a brilliant, intellectual, Progressive genius who doubts all those myths about some old bearded guy in the sky by way of brilliant critical thinking skills, instantly obtained after becoming a Democrat.)

IMHO

“Cuomo’s political career was deeply formed by his Catholic faith”.

I just threw up my breakfast. He was a heretic and apostate.
And now his shacked-up, Christ-hating son replaces him as an embarrassment for Catholics everywhere.

Paul VI did that?!? Man, outside of Humanae Vitae, everything that well-intentioned man did was a disaster.

I can't think of anything he did that didn't blow up in his face. And despite the fact that he spoke the truth in Humanae Vitae, everything he did BEFORE and AFTER ensured that it would be a dead letter. He allowed speculation to run rampant for about five years by appointing a "commission" to "discuss" contraception. During that time, tens of thousands of priests told millions of Catholics to go ahead and use The Pill. So millions were on The Pill the day HV was published. After, Paul VI allowed Cardinal John Wright, a notorious homosexual, to cut Cardinal Patrick O'Boyle, the only American bishop to uphold HV, off at the knees. Wright's secretary was Fr. Donald Wuerl, another notorious homosexual, who is now the unworthy successor of Patrick O'Boyle as Archbishop of Washington. Wuerl punishes priests who won't give Communion to out lesbians or pro-abortion politicians.

One MUST distinguish.

JURIDICALLY, anyone baptized a Catholic is a Catholic until he leaves the Church BY A FORMAL ACT. (I.e., not just drifting away, not just by attending another church.)

Obviously, someone like Cuomo, Pelosi, Biden, or anyone registered in the party of abortion, is a Catholic ONLY in the juridical sense. Morally, spiritually, they are apostates. Their situation is much WORSE than that of the ordinary Catholic grave sinner, because they falsely proclaim themselves CATHOLIC AND WITHOUT SIN.

“...a passionate Italian-American Catholic.”

A hyphenated American and a hyphenated Catholic.

Where did all the Americans go, not to mention the Catholics who respect human life?

Just asking.
