The source being the police representative or the NYT? Are you questioning the motive for the shooting or that it happened?
But..but Decommio the Mayor just said yesterday that NYC has never been safer. POS along with Bratton.
What? They were attacking people a block away and happened to hit the officers? Just shaking my head at that nonsense.
If they were plainclothed, then how could the robbers know they were cops? Did they flash their badges? Identify themselves as cops?
Maybe the robbers thought that two dudes were invading their turf and so they protected it.
I don't see this case as being another attack on cops. Although the cops need more practice time on the shooting range.
CNN report spends a minute on the robbery then the rest of their report on how the police disrespected Herr Wilhelm at the funeral Sunday.

The unidentified officers were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where they are in critical but stable condition. Both officers are expected to recover, the NYPD said.
The officers, who were in plain clothes, were part of a group of five cops who were responding to a call about a robbery at a grocery store on East 180th Street in the Bronx, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said. The officers were approaching two suspects who had just entered a nearby restaurant when one of the suspects opened fire, Bratton said. The officers returned fire and two of them were wounded.
