Myth vs Fact: Speaker's Election
conservativereview.com ^ | 1/4/15 | Daniel Horowitz

In most aspects of life, there are ‘cants’ and there are ‘wonts.’ When it comes to deposing John Boehner as Speaker of the House on Tuesday, there are only wonts. All excuses for lacking the ability to fire him have been discredited. Below are some of the myths that are circulating regarding the Speaker’s election.

As the effort to fire Boehner grows, some members who are sitting on the fence are looking for any excuse under the sun to avoid the effort. None of them can or will publicly vouch for Boehner and defend his support for amnesty, violation of the rules of the House, and false promises to his conference. So they are opting for excuses by claiming that there is no way to get rid of him or that there is no alternative to Boehner, aside from Nancy Pelosi. Politicians peddling that premise at this point are either willfully misleading their constituents or are woefully uninformed about the rules of the House and the latest political developments. Either way it is unacceptable.

As noted before, even without an alternative, members are free to vote for whomever they choose when their name is called by the Clerk of the House. If 29 members vote for someone other than Boehner, the process goes to a second ballot and a brokered conference meeting. That is where conservatives' leverage begins to negotiate concessions from the inevitable litany of people who will toss their hat into the ring.

But the supposition of Republicans not being given an alternative is irrelevant at this point.

There are now two official alternative candidates – Rep. Louise Gohmert (R-TX) and Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) – who will be nominated on the floor by fellow members. And perhaps there will be more to come.

Call your Representative and tell him he needs to be a patriot and NOT vote for Bonehead. Then call all the other Representatives in your state.

We can do this, but you can’t sit on your hands!

If they dump Boehner then outlook may turn a bit more optimistic. If McConnell should also get the axe I might begin to feel that perhaps the sun might rise again.

Call up or email your rep and say REMEMBER CANTOR?

You might be next!

Boehner needs to go. Cantor gone. And Scalise too. IF he was that stupid to speak there he can’t be trusted to lead the GOP.

McConnell too. Good Riddance.

A new leaf. Conservative not RINO’s.

I wonder is there a service to fax all offices of Congress?
What about an e-mail list-server for emailing all of them?

Boehner I hope is sweating the alcohol and nicotine out of his system. He can soon breath easier though as no longer being the subject of obama’s blackmail for whatever it is he is hiding. obama’s House water carrier will be a ‘has been’ who never was anything but a political hack..

" If 29 members vote for someone other than Boehner, the process goes to a second ballot and a brokered conference meeting."

The way that I (mis?)understand this procedure is that the quantity 29 derives from the assumption that no Dems or Indys will cast a vote for Boehner. What I'm saying is that if a Dem gets a wild hair in the wrong place, and votes for Boehner, that will cancel one of the 29- won't it?

In the referenced article it refers back to another article, in which it states: "The operative point here is that it is not sufficient to garner a plurality of the votes; the winner must secure a majority of the total number of votes cast. Consequently, given that there are 247 Republican members in the new Congress, if 29 members vote for someone other than Boehner – be it Rep. Jim Jordan, their favorite colleague, or even a private citizen – Boehner will be denied the majority of likely votes cast."

It appears to me that, since 247 minus 29 equals 218, that is %50.11494 of 435, which seems like a majority to me, even with 29 opposed, but what I'm saying is that a few Democrat votes will serve to elect Boehner- the best friend the Dems have on our side.

Or am I completely lost?

Yes, if democrats vote for Boehner, then the numbers change. But do you really expect democrats to vote for Boehner? At most they may vote present to help reduce the majority threshold.

Honestly, yes, I do. Why should they waste a vote for Pelosi? Boehner is truly their best friend. I won't be surprised if they get orders from S.F. Nancy or Hussein to vote that way.

If it goes to round two, do Democrats get to vote? And in round two, if only people who received votes in round one can be voted on, wouldn’t it be in the rats interest to vote for Pelosi, just to throw a wrench into the proceedings?

I know Pelosi wont’t do, but if I was her, I would encourage my caucus to vote for Boehmer. He’s the evil they do know, to a point where Boehner will work with her. Plus that screws the TEA party. If Gohmert wins, the Establishment will be hard pressed not to support conservative efforts.

People!!! There is only one person on the ballot at any time. You have a choice of a Yes or No or Present vote. The Present vote lowers the threshold of majority of votes cast because no vote was cast by the Present vote. There is no “vote-splitting” because there is only one candidate per vote. Once elected by the majority of votes cast then it is over. The GOP ain’t going to vote for Pelosi if Boehner is defeated. On the second round of voting then names are taken from the floor, namely Gomert/Yolo and each is voted on separately in alphabetical order until one reached a majority of votes. Don’t let your Congressman bamboozle you into thinking that they “have” to vote for any candidate—if they say this they are lying to you!!!

Democrats will get to vote on every ballot. The entire house elects their speaker.

But do you really expect democrats to vote for Boehner?

This exact scenario happened in the NH House of Representatives two weeks ago.

The GOP took back the House. The former GOP Speaker was chosen by the caucus majority as the "official Republican candidate". He is hated by RATs and RINOs because he is a patriot.

So, a number of GOPe traitors nominated a RINO and denied the "official" Republican candidate on the first ballot.

The RINO was then elected with both Republican and Democrat votes.

BUY A CLUE. They don't care about labels. They care about winning.

If Pelosi and Obama want Boehner to stay, he has 188 Democrat votes in his pocket, and only needs 30 RINOs to win.

It is, IMO, a done deal.

At least such a scenario makes it easier to form a third/second party movement.

I’ve discovered that Rep. Mike Kelly’s district office is “closed for training purposes” from Monday through Wednesday. Is that an isolated case?

Thank you. The same thing has happened in the Texas House for the past three legislative sessions.

I don’t understand why people don’t think Democrats will vote for Boehner.
