How bad was 2014 for MSNBC?
So bad, the left-wing cable news network lost the 2014 ratings war to CNN. Yes, that CNN.
According to Deadline, MSNBC is hemorrhaging viewers, especially in the all-important news demo (viewers aged 25-54):

I've never been in the habit of watching MSNBC, but viewed CNN regularly for 20 years until getting Fox about 10 years ago.
I've found absolutely nothing watchable on MSNBC. Granted, it's holiday week and they don't have their strongest talent on the job, but they're really appalling. Besides, it's jarring to run into Reverend Al unexpectedly. I caught a minute of Ronan Farrow. That was more than too much.
The only familiar face to me on CNN was Wolf Blitzer and, as always, he has pretty solid chops. Losing an airplane in Indonesia was a lucky break for CNN. It allowed them to take advantage of one of their true strengths; a very deep lineup of contributors with special expertise in their subject areas. When they discovered wreckage of the flight a few days ago the news babe on CNN looked sad enough to cry.

Yes, Public Enemy # 1, Brian Roberts. But, he is just in a “controlling” position due to different classes of stock and voting agreements that supercede “numerical majority’s”. There are other stockholders who could raise hell instead of watching it go down the toilet.
Great point you make though! Quite correct! I’ve been trying to draw attention to these “owners” for a long time, particularly Brian Roberts. They enable the Left to stock these companies with lefties like Matthews et al.
C’mon, these aren’t really businesses in the traditional sense. They’re unreported campaign contributions to the DNC, like all those money-losing big city daily newspapers.
