Target’s ‘Annie’ ads stir up controversy

Target is fighting back after being criticized for “Annie”-themed clothing ads showing a white model as Annie, as opposed to an African-American model, or Quvenzhané Wallis, the actress who plays the character in the holiday remake.

LaSean Rinique told Yahoo she launched a Change.org petition after her daughter, an “Annie” fan, noticed that a girl in the ads sporting Annie’s signature red dress and locket was white, unlike Wallis, who appears alongside Jamie Foxx in the movie remake.

It wouldn’t faze most people today, but in the 1930’s a white, famous gazillionaire would not have a black girlfiend.

Understood. Of course, in the '30s, they got a Swede to play Chrlie Chan, in the '50s John wayne played Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror", and in the '60s Mickey Rooney played the Japanese neighbor in "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

In the original comic strip, Warbucks was married, but he didn't get on well with his wife, so she was not involved in the strip. Taking on a little girl in that context would play as creepy today (though not as creepy as the origin story of Captain Marvel, showing what a different time we are in). For the play/Columbia movie that added the white secretary as the romantic interest, with her promoting Annie. That worked out pretty well. White gazillionaires have been romancing secretaries ever since young women have been secretaries.

Can we all just agree on a nice intermediate shade of brown that we use for all advertisements, movies, rock stars, teachers, cops, soldiers, etc...

There HAS to be an ideal shade of skin that won't offend anyone.

Yep a black Annie makes no sense given the time period.

When they made the Wild Wild West movie with a black actor, Will Smith as Jim West, that also made no sense. No way would a black man have been a secret service agent in the 1870s.
