Target’s ‘Annie’ ads stir up controversy

Target is fighting back after being criticized for “Annie”-themed clothing ads showing a white model as Annie, as opposed to an African-American model, or Quvenzhané Wallis, the actress who plays the character in the holiday remake.

LaSean Rinique told Yahoo she launched a Change.org petition after her daughter, an “Annie” fan, noticed that a girl in the ads sporting Annie’s signature red dress and locket was white, unlike Wallis, who appears alongside Jamie Foxx in the movie remake.

A black “Annie” doesn’t even make sense,
unless they changed the era in which it was set.

Lots more whites are going to be buying these outfits so Target innocently had the white models......

ACTUALLY Target had little to do with this. Its their advertizing agency that chose white models. There will be lots fewer black buyers than white buyers for these Annie outfits. The movie is a flop (I hear) so buying won’t be much anyhow

Annie, the movie, is from the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. She is white (and drawn with no eyes). The fact that they made a movie with a black Annie is inaccurate, which probably explains why the movie bombed.

Of course, having an actress with an unrecognizable and unpronounceable name doesn't help.

Once again, the 13% of the population that is the least educated, the least productive, the most criminal, the most dependent on the largess of others is dictating that a black girl should represent a white cartoon character created in 1924 and was portrayed on radio and stage and in movies as such.
Of course that same 13% are also demanding that a fictional Scottish secret agent be portrayed by a black actor.

They did. And they replaced Daddy Warbucks (one of the GREAT all-time character names) with some fellow named Max Stacks.

All in the Family:
Henry Jefferson (brother of George): What makes you think God isn’t black?

Archie: What are you talking about! Every picture you seen of God, he’s white.

Henry: Well maybe you were looking at the negative.

(Black character to white pizzeria owner in Spike Lee’s
Do the Right Thing): “Yo, Sal! How come there ain’t no
brothers on the wall?
(Sal’s has pictures of famous Italian-Americans on his wall...)

Go to the zoo. Throw some peanuts in the cage everyday for a week. Don’t throw them in on the last day you visit. Watch the reaction. Same difference.

Yrs ago there was a black Odd Couple TV show (I think Demond Wilson from Sanford and Son was in it). Then they did a
female version.

How about if someone did a movie with a white actor as a real life figure-—say, a remake of Malcolm X...

My daughter’s boyfriend is black. He has a niece who is 5. My daughter wanted to get her a black doll for Christmas. She said she had a hard time finding one. I never thought about it before, but I guess there aren’t many black dolls or toys geared to black children. I guess it’s because of white privilege.

Strange how people of color are the only ones that see color at every issue.
Wonder what the phobia word for that is?.

Was in Target doing a bit of shopping before Christmas and looked at the Annie clothing. Cheapest made, ugliest stuff you ever want to see. I wouldn’t waste a dime on it myself.

Target’s merchandise quality has taken a huge drop in the past few years.

I used to work for a government agency that dealt with child welfare cases. When a software developer sold a new case management package to the agency it included various buttons with symbols . . . the child cartoon was of a white boy with blond hair, which didn’t sit well with at least one of the hard-left white lesbians in the office, so the developer was asked back to replace the offending symbol with a dark skin dark hair graphic.

Of course, if the application had been delivered with a dark skin/hair graphic, that would have been racist to suggest that recipients of child welfare aid were kids of color.
