A couple is still shaken up after they were robbed at gunpoint in a Lenexa neighborhood when trying to check out a car they found on Craigslist.

The Petersons went to the Lenexa home on Hauser Street and knocked on the door, but nobody answered. They said it looked as though nobody lived in the house. Then, a little black car pulled up and three people robbed them.

You are lucky to be alive. Anytime you are disturbed or uncomfortable there is danger or a mistake about to be made. The Bible says ‘let the peace of God rule in your heart.’

Craigslist is known to attract criminals and scams of every sort . They experience an unusually high level of crime related to sales/services offered at the site, and put up CYA warnings. There are no safeguards built in, so it’s up to the honest buyer/seller to be very careful.

That’s why I’d never try to sell a car by myself, it’s just not worth the trouble.

SEE? SEE?

Another reason why Craiglist is dangerous.

Just kidding!

I think the risk of criminal buyers is probably the same as it was with newspaper ads. There is probably more risk with Craig’s List sellers because it is free. Plus the paper trail of a financial transaction is easier to follow than just an internet post.

Maybe they should charge a nominal fee just to help cut down on criminal activity.

I even had a shoplifter at my garage sale. She drove a BMW. There is no such thing as risk free.

I'm not the paranoid type but you did right by not hiring him because something didn't feel right. Something was amiss. Following your gut instinct does work.

I've always found it best to hire people I seek out, rather than those that approach me. I have more control that way.

I used to cubstone a lot of used cars. Started out on classified ads in the paper before there was a Craigslist.

I’ve had some crazy incidents. Never dangerous. But weird.

One time it was 10 pm. The test drives were done and the buyer wanted the car. I lowered the price to $2300 and he put all sorts of cash on the table. Tens, Twenties, Fifties and Hundreds.

But he could not count.

So I sorted the bills, counted it up and he was $120 short. He really was not trying to short change me, he really was just that dumb.

By now I was getting unhappy. I said look. Come back tomorrow with more, but for now - We Are Done. Go home.

He could’nt. He had come in from 200 miles away. I made him go back to the Wal Mart and have some friend/family Western Union him more money. He came back with the correct price. I signed the title and handed him the keys. He left.

It was midnite by that time.

Oh well. I made money on that car.

And this is why I’m going to donate my old gas dryer, and not try to sell it on Craigslist.

Was the car ever recovered?

No.....With that being said, the guy is a well to do boat broker so losing his car with insurance reimbursing him probably didn't break his heart.

What bugs ME the most tho is if I was the seller and sitting in the passenger seat of my car while a prospective buyer is driving it, I would have been carrying a concealed weapon and prepared to use it.

I'm not criticizing the guy for not having a firearm since that's a personal choice that not many people wish to make. I can understand that and respect it........

And as a side note, since I mentioned a suburb of Detroit (St. Clair Shores), the perp was not black but rather of middle eastern descent. Either Chaldean or Albanian....from what I've been reading of the growing Albanian community here in S.E. Michigan, I would bet on him being an Albanian......

Of course if the couple in the story had brought cash they would have lost all $3200.

On car purchases, meet at a bank. Or get a cashier’s check from a local bank and call to verify it. I like that better than large amounts of cash.

The scariest part of private car transactions is the initial meet-up and test drive. I have done it several times and so far so good.

OPSEC. Situational Awareness. Forewarned is forearmed. Never go out these days unarmed. Rules for survival.

Craiglist is a fence for stolen property and merchandise, and also a great way to lure dopes into being violently robbed.

So go ahead and use Craigslist.

I understand what you are saying about the gun, but I would not have had one either. It is a good idea.

Too bad the guy got away with it. We had a car stolen once. It was never recovered either. I wonder how often they are recovered.

I think so, too. I am glad I reacted to lock the door. I wish I had thought to call the police. It is just that nothing actually happened.

Most of my income for the last four years has come from Craigslist. I have only been screwed once and only for about $350.00.
