The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that it would scrap a decades-old lifetime prohibition on blood donation by gay and bisexual men, a change that experts said was long overdue and could lift the annual blood supply by as much as 4 percent.
The F.D.A. enacted the ban in 1983, early in the AIDS epidemic. At the time, little was known about the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes the disease, and there was no quick test to determine whether somebody had it. But science and the understanding of H.I.V. in particular has advanced in the intervening decades, and on Tuesday the F.D.A. acknowledged as much, lifting the lifetime ban but keeping in place a more modest block on donations by men who have had sex with other men in the last 12 months.
In a statement, the agency said it had carefully examined and considered the scientific evidence before changing the policy. It said it intended to issue a draft guidance detailing the change in 2015.
The shift puts the United States on par with European countries like Britain, which adjusted its lifetime ban in favor of a 12-month restriction in 2011. Mens health advocates welcomed the move, saying that the ban was not based on the latest science and that it perpetuated stigma about gay men as a risk to the health of the nation. [...]
This is a major victory for gay civil rights, said I. Glenn Cohen, a law professor at Harvard University who specializes in bioethics and health. Were leaving behind the old view that every gay man is a potential infection source." He said, however, that the policy was still not rational enough."

What’s the shelf life?
That’s all well and good for planned surgeries, but it’s in an emergency when you really need it.
Of course, “your” blood won’t be at the location where you need it in an emergency.
AND, get this, they DO NOT test the blood for disease.
The number of deaths caused by political correctness is about to increase.
INSANITY...

Is that a boozer who makes his money from donating blood for his next bottle?
Just plain WRONG.
They want to make everyone experience the consequences that the homos have.
They might justify it with the idea that it’s the only way to make everyone care about the problem.
But it’s really about “we’re behaving in ways that God abhors, and we want to make sure that those who follow God’s rules experience the same consequences as we do”.
This is insane, and relies on self-reporting for the 12 month rule. As one who has had many transfusions in the past, I can only hope that if I should ever require emergency blood, I have a nearby family member who can donate.
And, this article is just talking about AIDs. Homosexual men get all kinds of other sex diseases, and they get them multiple times. The lifestyle is not a healthy one, and to endanger other people with whatever diseases they may be carrying is absurd.
autologous blood donation
I work for a company that specializes in equipment for this procedure. Further, we make equipment that salvages your own lost blood for re-infusion during an operation.
It was this equipment that caused our company to go from small cap to mid cap.
In a way, our company success is loosely tied to the sodomite culture.
And let us never forget that AIDS was originally known as GRIDS - Gay Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
Gotta love Political Correctness...
I know a surgeon who kept a private pool of blood donors for his patients.
Guess he didn’t trust what was coming out of blood banks.
Idiots.
The Kenyan-in-Thief strikes again!
I didn’t know my civil rights were being violated. I am not gay but still can not give blood for other reasons. Who do I sue?
“What happened to FIRST DO NO HARM??!!”
The oath has gone through several revisions and changes in emphasis.
Medicine is now the province of bureaucrats and delivery technicians. Try getting a “prognosis” out of a doctor beyond ‘let’s try this next batch of billable tests...’
There are NO cures on the horizon, only treatments...treatments that garner huge amounts of long term cash. Thanks to the FDA, it takes around a decade to get a medicine to market. That cost raises the price of the med and makes the business model more apt to invest in treatment vice CURING A D4MN DISEASE!

political position usurping hard real world science.
Obama deathcare at work. More dead people less government burden.
First do all harm, that’s what it seems to be these days.
If they don’t make you sick with something lethal, how will they get money out of you?
