Some of the consequences of climate change are obvious -- shrinking polar ice caps, rising sea levels, more damaging floods -- and some are subtle. Among the latter, we can now add bad-tasting seafood.
So concludes a team of researchers led by Sam Dupe of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, recently published in the Journal of Shellfish Research. They tested shrimp raised for three weeks in seawater of average pH versus shrimp raised in acidic waters, similar to conditions that may prevail as the continued emission of excess carbon dioxide turns the oceans more acidic.
Seafood is an important source of protein for the human population, and likely to become more important. Research into factors that could affect the viability of the seafood industry, including the palatability of the product, shouldn't be lightly dismissed.

Who decides what shrimp should taste like?
#12. Do you expect someone whose name is “Sam Dupe” to have “intellectual honesty”?
I once read an article on something or other by “U.R. Stupid”, Sam Dupe’s cousin. Same kind of crap for the great unwashed, uneducated and Democrats.
This article leaves a “bad taste” in my brain.
May prevail a few centuries from now! There is NO acidic water like that on the planet now, mind you. They had to mix some up in a lab to pull this half-assed ruse.
But for openers, the ice pack at both poles has INCREASED exponentially in just a few years. There are NO drowning bears, and the sea level isn’t rising.
Gotta’ throw another brown flag and call BS on the whole story!
People you meet when home schooled. You’d never hear about him in HS world history .... then too, being Jewish I learned all about antisemitism over the centuries.
The writer for this LA Times article has his head firmly up his rear end sideways. He forgot a few more things that signal climate change. 1) More people at the beach. 2) They stay in the water longer 3) Birds roost higher up in the trees. 4) They don’t wear coats until later in the winter.
Shrimp grown in anything but open sea water will never taste good. The PH had nothing to do with it.
We raised some normal shrimp, then we raised some in water that we pooped in...
A 100-mile wide comet composed entirely of frozen hydrochloric acid hitting square in the middle of the Pacific MIGHT raise the acidity of the oceans...of course, that would be the least of our problems! /s;)
Who can afford shrimp except for people on food stamps. Oops, I mean SNAP. Can’t have the moochers have their feelings hurt because they take a government hand-out.
There is no such thing as a bad-tasting shrimp.
If you don’t want yours, give them to me.
if they really expect us to believe that’s the reason for bad tasting shrimp they’ve never seen the cesspits they grown them in in india and other places. it’s a wonder we don’t all have several hepatatii.
If you cook the shrimp over burning yak dung, you won’t notice any subtle differences in taste caused by global warming.
I noticed most frozen shrimp were from China Vietnam Taiwan. Heck, even the Alaskan Cod was from China. No longer buy seafood.
Kinda impossible to taste something that doesn't exist.
'course, you'd never convince the government research grant teat suckers of that.
b.s.
That’s why we in Louisiana buy “Louisiana farm raised shrimp and crawfish”. Otherwise, y’all might be getting them from some crappy part of the world, where they taste bad and you get sick!
Swedish Taxpayers got Duped...(I hope we didn’t get Duped in this study).
