THE GIFT OF THE MAGI
Those of you who are more "mature" Marines & Sailors will remember one of the pre-eminent TV series of the '50's, Rod Serling's Twilight Zone. Many of these programs were quite scary, but they usually had a good moral and made the point in a rather unforgettable manner.
On one episode, an astronaut is readying for his blast off on a fifty-year mission to outer space. He is to be placed in a state of suspended animation and will not age one day by the time he returns to Earth. As fate has it, he meets a lovely woman the evening before launch, and it is love at first sight for both of them. They agonize over the love and marriage they will be unable to share because of the space voyage. The next morning his space flight begins. The woman is visibly shaken by the cruel plot fate played on the two of them. In the final scene, fifty years hence, NASA brings the rocket back to Earth. The capsule is opened and an aged man emerges from inside. He pulled the plug on the cryogenic machine before the launch. The face of his fiancée is then shown. She is still young and vibrant; she had herself placed in suspended animation on the day of the launch! One engineer then reflects: I feel blessed to have met two people who truly knew the meaning of love! End of program. These two people, motivated by real love, were prepared to make an unusual sacrifice for each other. Sometimes we forget that keeping love strong in marriage requires a commitment to LOVE...and like any commitment, that means dedication, work, sacrifice. Too many people give up on relationships when the going gets rough because they don't understand how much effort and sacrifice for one another is necessary to sustain a marriage. May we all realize the true meaning of love and marriage...and what is required to sustain this wonderful gift from above!
Rod Serling's version

Just The Right Time
The conductor stood on the podium, his eyes scanning the choir and orchestra. The singers arranged the music in their folders, found a comfortable position for standing, and held the folder where they could see the conductor just over the top. Orchestra members positioned their music on the stand, found a comfortable position in their seats, and then sat still. The conductor waited and watched until everyone was ready. Then, with a downbeat of his baton, the sounds of Handels Overture to Messiah filled the cathedral.
With the sound swirling around me, I felt I was immersed in Christmaswhen God, at just the right moment, signaled the downbeat and set in motion an overture that started with the birth of the Messiah, the High Priest of the good things to come (Heb. 9:11).
Every Christmas, as we celebrate Christs first coming with glorious music, Im reminded that Gods people, like choir and orchestra members, are getting ready for the next downbeat of the conductor when Christ will come again. On that day, we will participate with Him in the final movement of Gods symphony of redemptionmaking all things new (Rev. 21:5). In anticipation, we need to keep our eyes on the conductor and make sure we are ready.
Sound the soul-inspiring anthem,
Angel hosts, your harps attune;
Earths long night is almost over,
Christ is comingcoming soon! Macomber
The advent of Christ celebrates His birth and anticipates His return.

Substantial progress on the fence today! We have most of the back line up - tomorrow we should finish that, finish the gap on the South side between our neighbor's fence and ours - about 4 feet, and get the gate up. That will secure the rear - we can pretty much do the north line when we want.
Sorry I've been so absent lately - between work, Choir and Christmas preparation, I'm way behind the power curve.
I think the most recent infection is finally behind me - breathing freely and feeling better.

This is the Arabic character "nun" the first letter of the word "Nazarene." I post it as my avatar in solidarity with people of all faiths suffering persecution at the hands of Islam. Many of them are members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, dating from the days of the Apostles. They endure cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors they, and we, are all "Nazarenes." |

Back in 1980, Joshua Rifkin wrote a scholarly paper in one of the journals arguing that the choruses in the Bach cantatas were actually performed by the four soloists and not by a genuine chorus. It was a schola, not a massed chorus.
A few months later, Gerard Schwarz programmed a concert with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in Pasadena programming two different Bach cantatas based on Rifkin's theory. It was a brave move on Schwarz's part, and it worked quite well. You could hear the vocal lines much more clearly.

Kathy, I just read the Head of this evening's thread - absolutely outstanding! I remember seeing both the Twilight Zone episode and another TV show of the O'Henry short story - the brooch and the watch fob. For some reason, the true significance of the Serling version didn't register with me. Thank you so much for posting this - you educated me! :)

Good evening, Maestro! Had not heard that before, but it makes perfect sense to me. Along the same lines, some of the best performances of Messiah I have heard are sung by a choir of 16 rather than a large choir.

On the night of the 24th, I'll be doing my annual "Messiah" with Christopher Hogwood's 1982 version with small chorus, period instruments and correct Baroque performance practices. All of that is explained and analyzed in my post.
We lost Hogwood three months ago, and that's a real blow to people like me.
