'We Still Have More Work To Do''
The State Department's Rose Gottemoeller, under secretary for arms control and international security, spoke at the Brookings Institution Thursday where she reaffirmed the United States' "unassailable" commitment to putting the nuclear weapons genie back in the bottle. Gottemoeller told the attendees at the Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Initiative-sponsored event that "the U.S. commitment to achieving the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons is unassailable."
She went on to note that the nation's stockpile of active weapons is down 85 percent from maximum cold war levels, falling to 4,804 in 2013 from a high of 31,255. But, she said, "We still have more work to do."

You can’t hug a commie with nuclear arms.
“-—why are they allowed to remain-—? “ Well one reason is that I’m only one guy and my legs aren’t long enough to track them all down one at a time. But I do let the local froot loops know when they’re pushing their luck. Semper Fi.
Okay, sounds like you know something about this. That’s why I asked. So should I be sleepless since we only have some 1000 warheads on our Tridents? And how many Tridents are at sea at any given time? Think I’m going to go get a drink. Seems I was entirely wrong about our nuke defenses.
I think our 450 MMIII have one warhead from the MX missile - reduced to one, now.
I’m guessing the rest must be something of the B-83 type for B-2’s and standoff missiles for B-52’s.
I was thinking they dismantled all the B-61’s. Or at least they were.
i live around 15 miles from the Boston city limits, will I be safe?
The State department is rotten with America haters and representatives that have “gone native” in their dealings with foreign powers.
As I've stated many times they are not my worry. It's the Islamists once they get a nuke they can deploy or transport.
I think we’ve decreased our amount of nuclear weapons because we now don’t need as many as we did before. Their payload is greater and our targeting systems better.
I’m not really worried about a nuclear attack as much as I’m worried about some “inner city kid” killing me with a punch to the face as I walk down the street.
I’d say we’re getting a bit weaker than I’d like.
As I think you’ve referenced, MAD works on everyone - except jihad-boys.
With O in office, I would expect they’d make moves elsewhere, at first.
Exactly the same question McCarthy asked, and we all know what happened to him.
Sure they can, they are just confused about which is which.
Will anyone stop him?
His final act as president will be the pardoning of every 'political prisoner' in America. It would number in the thousands.
More likely they are lying and we only have a couple hundred.
But, but, but they were innocent, my professor said so.
And now, most agree McCarthy was right all along. Pray it doesn’t take fifty years for the scales to fall...again.
Yep, 4800 is enough to destroy every major city on Earth multiple times over. Not a big deal. 30k is a little excessive and that means less maintenance. As long as we have around 4000, I think that number is perfect. When in a nuclear war will one country need to launch 30,000? When would we ever need to use 30,000 nukes? Enlighten me here.
This sums up conventional warfare perfectly. As long as you aren’t faced with destruction and only one nuke is being used during a war. You can escalate and launch more nukes. Causing the enemy to escalate, and launch more. Or you can respond conventionally with a massive blow like you hypothetically present.
The only time nuclear warheads are needed are for deterrence. There is no conventional reason beyond deterrence for needing 4800. IMHO. You will never use them beyond one or two scenarios, and you better hope to God the enemy doesn’t use a bunch of theirs and you have to respond in kind, because in that scenario, everybody loses.
Isn’t that what I said? ;^)
Very comforting.
