The ruble weakened against the dollar and euro on Thursday with traders saying President Vladimir Putin had so far offered no concrete measures to pull Russia out of a crisis at his end-of-year news conference.

At 0954 GMT (04:54 a.m. EST), the ruble was around 3 percent weaker against the dollar at 62.04 RUBUTSTN=MCX after opening more than 1 percent higher. The rouble was also around 2 percent weaker versus the euro at 76.50 EURRUBTN=MCX on the Moscow Exchange.

The man who is sooooooooooo STRONG and sooooo in love with his country that he’s attacking its peaceful neighbors can’t assure the markets.

Cuba's main benefactors, Venezuela and Russia are on the ropes.

A wartime President would be doing everything to keep the price of oil down to send these countries reeling and force Cuba to our terms.

Instead a throws the CUBCOMs a lifeline.

I agree. Why the urgency? What benefit do the Cubans get out of this? I see where it plays to Obama’s Leftist supporters. But what does it do for peace and security and the human rights of Cubans?

Rumors have it that Obama may ask for the sanctions on Russia to be dropped.

BTW this is starting to impact Europe.

It should be noted that the crash in oil prices is due to less demand for it from China, whose economy is grinding to a halt. The Saudis are not pumping any more, they are actually cutting production by a bit.

What’s a good example of the impacts in Europe that you mention?

When a wild animal is backed into a corner, it comes out teeth snarling and biting. Putin is going to strike somewhere. He is not going to sit there and watch this crush his plans for a new Soviet empire. He is going to do something to strike out. Bank on it.

Exactly, that's the real point of this "humanitarian" gesture, that has been missed by most observers and commenters. It has nothing to do with the policy "not working" (what does that even mean? If embargo is not "working" how was it supposed to "work" and why did Cuba, which trades with many other Western countries desperately wanted it to end?)

The capo di tutti capi, the Czar of all czars Obama noticed that despite his best efforts to keep oil and gas prices up, the energy market has done so much damage to Russia (and Iran), the main benefactor of rogue and socilaist regimes in this world that he had to bail them out, by trumpeting that the "evil" past and current policies of the USA are "not working" and for "humanitarian" reasons he will simply override them, by creating his own, "legacy"-making one.

So what happens when China starts trying to collect debt owed instead of just letting it roll over into new bonds

Maybe Pootin could sell the stuff he built at Soshi and get his wasted 50 billion back? The only thing happening there now, after the Olympics, seems to be a tourist rope slide. All that Russian economic development works out so great? Wait to hear that he can’t buy fuel for the Bear bombers anymore——back in mothballs for another decade or so.

Who will invest again in Russia as long as Putin and gang run it? Even with them gone Russians have repeatedly shown the world they cannot be trusted with anything.

Russians are reaping what they have sown. Russians clean up your house and provide verification you have amended your ways or sink into complete ruin.

During the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s summary press conference, TV host and TVRain journalist Kseniya Sobchak asked him a question, to which the Russian leader replied, addressing his press secretary Dmitry Peskov: “Why did you give her the floor?”

Sobchak mentioned the events in Grozny and asked Putin whether he would defend the citizens and their families in Chechnya, who were deemed guilty even before the trial, and whether he would burn their houses down. The journalist also mentioned the so-called ‘fifth estate’ to Putin, as well as the fake reports on Ukraine on Russian federal channels, and asked whether the President viewed the world as divided into ‘banderlogs and his associates.’

Putin replied to Sobchak’s question with a joke: he asked his press secretary Dmitry Peskov: “Why did you let her speak?”, to which the latter replied: “guilty.”

After which he granted a comment to Sobchak, formally distancing himself from the massacres in Chechnya.

However, Putin did not reply to the question about the fake reports on Russian federal channels.

The politician also tried to joke his way out of inciting animosity among Russian citizens, saying that it had been Kipling who’d come up with the banderlogs, and that nobody is oppressing the discontented in Russia, however, he did mention Valeriya and Kobzon’s “oppression” in Europe.

Also a reminder that during Putin’s press conference, the police arrested 20 oppositional journalists, who were not allowed to attend the President’s press conference.
