John McAdams, a Marquette University associate professor, says he is being "treated like a potential terrorist" after being suspended with pay and banned from campus while the university investigates his conduct, presumably because he publicly criticized a teaching assistant for not allowing discussion of gay marriage in an ethics class.
A student had objected to the teaching assistant's handling of the class discussion weeks ago and, after class, recorded his conversation with her. The teaching assistant told the student that "some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions." She suggested if someone in the class were homosexual, they could be offended if another student challenged gay marriage.
The student who disagreed told her it was his right as an American citizen to make arguments against gay marriage, to which teaching assistant Cheryl Abbate replied: "You don't have a right in this class to make homophobic comments."

On a Catholic campus, a student is told she can’t express views that correspond to Catholic teaching, and a professor is suspended for defending the student. That’s what “Catholic” education has come to. Boycott Catholic schools at ALL levels.

The chance to abuse a small, insignificant position to bully someone they disagree with is nirvana to a jackass like Cheryl Abbate.
Well, yeah, but the situation on nominally Catholic campuses like Marquette (and Georgetown, and ND, and BC, and so on and so on) is special.
There is (obviously) a very large homosexual faction (I can't think of a better word, although there may be one) in the American Catholic Church. Because they desire for unclear reasons to remain Catholic, they can't really be very "out" in their advocacy and lobbying activities, so they tend to gang up on individuals to create a climate of intimidation and fear.
For undergraduates and non-tenured faculty, to be identified with the catechism or with natural law is beyond the pale, and they all know it.
I suspect the reason the bishops and the Bishop of Rome don't crack down on this is the obvious one, but there may be others that some here may suggest.
Anyway, I don't think this is principally a Leftist phenomenon, but rather a specifically Catholic homosexualist one.

My guess is that Marquette ceased to be a Roman Catholic school long ago. Most of the Catholic universities stopped teaching Papist doctrine a couple generations ago. These days they’re little more than secular private schools with a church on campus.
Is she a prof or a TA? Big difference.
That’s the way I see it. . .and perhaps I am a bit confused, but the opening paragraph is not clear, makes it sound like some conservative guy was the bad guy by stopping a homo discussion.
Maybe that’s just the way I read it.

I don't know about "large", but it is certainly influential.
