WASHINGTON — President Obama has decided to sign legislation imposing further sanctions on Russia and authorizing additional aid to Ukraine, despite concerns that it will complicate his efforts to maintain a unified front with European allies, the White House said on Tuesday.

The legislation calls for a raft of new measures penalizing Russia’s military and energy sectors and authorizes $350 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including antitank weapons, tactical surveillance drones and counter-artillery radar. The bill was approved unanimously by Congress, but Mr. Obama hedged for days on whether he would sign it. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

The scene at a mall in central Moscow. Fearing inflation, Russians are reacting to the falling ruble by snapping up expensive items like appliances and laptops.

Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, announced the decision to approve the bill even as he described the president’s qualms over it. Mr. Earnest said it sent a “confusing message” internationally, including language “that does not reflect the consultations” with European powers. But in the end, he added, the president opted to allow the bill to become law because it does contain some flexibility that will give him room to maneuver.

Russia has an ally in Iran and this oil drop affects both as well as sanctions. Maybe they collaborate in attacking the Saudis. Obama’s adviser Valerie(Iranian parents?) would sure be in a pickle.

Russia backed off then just like they will always back off every time we stand up to them.

Must be a total coincidence that it is quieting down in Ukraine just as the Russian economy crashes.

“Must be a total coincidence that it is quieting down in Ukraine just as the Russian economy crashes.”

Winter, and the destruction of 2/3rds of Ukraine’s military hardware is more responsible for that, than anything else.

Both sides are rearming, so have no fear, it will light up again in the spring, IMHO.
(IF Kiev isn’t on fire again by then from the internal politics)

Not having a Reagan is a problem, but the public can’t stomach and Iraq or Afghanistan. Russia could inflict real harm and China would likely stop making crap for us. That is why where won’t be a major conflict with Russia.

Obama is being advised Zbrinski?, the foreign policy advisor who served under Carter. Apparently, this guy likes to play games with the old bear.

Do you think Obama takes the old crank seriously? It’s been awhile since Zbignew has been at the front of events.

Apparently many of you don’t understand, Putin is not stupid and yes he is angry about $55 oil and sanctions. Plus he knows the gay boy rules America and the Euros are pacifists. There fore Putin knows he can do what ever he wishes, as Obola downsizes our military.

Russians will starve if Putin inflicts “real harm” because nobody will want to do business with an unstable Russia. He’ll be begging Zimbabwe for business. EU, Chicoms, everybody else will take a pass.

The Chinese are not stupid like Putin is. They know that it is better for China to be America's friend. It would be better for Russia to be our friend too but Putin is too much of a savage drooling imbecile to figure that out. The Chinese are not going to ruin their relationship with us for the sake of Putin's mindless idiocy.

Yeah, and his budget, currency, debt, and modernizing of his military are not going to happen. But you’ve got the expert insights.
