CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- William Shakespeare asked "What's in a name?" It means plenty of controversy if you are referring to Coonskin Park.
The head of the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Commission, retired state Adj. Gen. Allen Tackett, wants to rename the park after Kanawha County Commissioner Hoppy Shores, who was just elected to his seventh term. The park's name is is generally associated with a type of a fur cap made from a raccoon skin, but Tackett said the term could be offensive to others.
The commission is set to discuss the name change at a Thursday meeting.

“the term could be offensive to others”
This is only a valid complaint if you’re a member of a recognized “victim class”.
If pro-lifers, or Christians, or Jews are “offended”, don’t expect anybody to pay attention.
I have skin. I am offended.
And rename rac(c-word)s to ???
rac-ocrats?
rac-LoInfoVoters?
rac-reparations-due-me?
Sorry. It’s all just getting out of hand.
Exactly.
There was a family named ‘Coon’ in town when I was a kid.............
They are coon-fingering with logic here.
Leave it to West Virginia. You know, I always thought all the jokes about WV were just plain mean, and then I moved there and realized they are not mean...just true. Wow.
They want to appease the permanently offended class (POC). Remember a few years ago when the POC got their panties in a bunch because someone used the word “niggardly”. Now they want to rename the park because someone MIGHT be offended, and you can bet that a member of the POC is waiting in the wings to file a complaint.
Imagine the horror of the ignorant bystander when hearing the term that Cajuns use for each other in casual conversation.
They didn’t rename it after Bob Byrd?
I’m more offended by naming things after career politicians unless they’ve been dead a hundred years. I have to ride down “Bill Morris Parkway” on occasion, I find that “offensive” my wife and I may have been the only two in Shelby County, Tn. to never vote for him. We just call it the 385.
Ya know Badger.....they could be related...
Why not just rename it "Hetereos Might Want to Stay Out of the Men's Rooms Park"?
Charlottesville, VA, now has a John Warner Parkway.
Disgusting.
We have ( or at I have) learned from no less than the president of the United States is that the apparent currently acceptable and fashionable term to be used to insure no offense is “people of color”
Hence forth, we can say POC’s
As in “some POC’s are offended by the word coonskin to designate a hat”.
My son thought that the Redskins should be renamed the Racoons. Could you hear the chants? Guess that one won’t work.
Only idiots are “offended” by crap like that
Shelby County was named for Gov. Isaac Shelby while he was still living.
