An Iranian-born gunman was killed, two of his hostages are dead and four injured after a dramatic and chaotic firefight brought an end to a terrorist siege at a Sydney cafe.
Teams of heavily armed police swooped on the Lindt Chocolat cafe in a hail of gunfire, ending a tense stand-off where Man Haron Monis had been holding around 17 people captive.
Police issued a statement describing the event as a confrontation with a 50-year man, who they said died after shots were fired. The man was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, police said.
A man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38, also died, the police said in their statement.
Of the injured, two women have non life-threatening injuries and a police officer was injured by gunshot pellets, the police said. Another woman has a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Live television coverage earlier showed at least two people being taken away from the scene on stretchers, while one hostage was seen being carried out of the building. She appeared to be in pain and blood flowed down her legs.
Nine News reported that eleven hostages had been accounted for after the police raid, which occurred shortly after 2am.

These islamics go in intending to die. I don’t think they consider ‘martyrdom’ discouraging.
I think in Australia, the loser of such a suit has to pay, unlike here.
Still, killing them can’t hurt.
Monis, who was killed during the final minutes of the siege in Sydney’s CBD, was no stranger to police; with a long rap sheet including allegations of sexual abuse and organising the murder of his ex-wife.
Monis was born Manteghi Bourjerdi and fled from Iran to Australia in 1996 where he changed his name to Man Haron Monis and assumed the title of Sheik Haron.

So sad to wake up to the news about the hostages who were killed. I so hoped all would make it out alive. But it could have been worse - - all being killed. Thankful that wasn’t the case.
Yeah I just found out today he may kill his ex-wife
It’s a waste of time to study the shooter. I refuse to accept the excuse that he was mentally ill. He was just plain evil and he met the fate appropriate to the evil.
I will, however, pray for the victims and their loved ones.
"As tragic as this event is, the greater tragedy would be for Australia's diversity to suffer."
Wow, I wish to one day live in a freedom of the press country like Australia. They are even allowed to have a headline with Muslim Gunman in it. Here, it would be called workplace violence. And of course no one’s peaceful religion would be questioned.
Good to see the Australian Immigration service is right on top'o'things. The Worthy Oriental Gentlemen of Australia are way out of line in certain locales and need strong Christian instruction, vigorously applied.
David Rutledge: What was your position in the government?
Manteghi Boroujerdi: In Iran, mostly I have been involved with the Ministry of Intelligence and Security.
- from a 2001 interview he gave to the ABC. I've just posted a link:- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3237514/posts
He should NOT have been granted political asylum in Australia for starters. And since his arrival in Australia & his criminal record at least thereafter, with many serious charges against him, he should have been firmly locked up for good if not deported. Noteworthy however is that the flag he was forcing the hostages yesterday to display was not the flag of islamic republic of iran. It was exactly the flag of saudi arabia in arabic writing but in black not green. Also known as Shahada flag of islam; the colour is significant; a black flag in islam is a declaration of war ie ‘an activist islamist’. In fact black is the real colour of the islam & islamists.
I’ve actually changed my mind - the information that this man was once part of Iranian intelligence is potentially significant.
As a refugee from Iran he would have slid straight into welfare and his wife and girlfriend as well, probably.
He’s had one period in jail during which he was covered in excrement. He needs to be buried that way.
"Manteghi Boroujerdi: This the 19th day I am in this protest, and chaining myself, my hand and my leg, to this Parliament. I want first of all to show to people of Australia that the Iranian regime is against human rights, and I am gathering some signatures in this petition. I have more than 1,000 signatures, Australian people are really nice and kind people, and I want to send this petition to Mr John Howard to ask the Prime Minister to ask the Iranian regime to free my family, because the Iranian regime has a good economic relation with Australia, so I think if the Prime Minister asks the Iranian regime to free my family, they will do..."
So let me jump to the obvious conclusion here...his wife was ultimately able to join him in Australia, with or without their two daughters, he then finds himself a girlfriend (probably a number two wife) then number one wife is murdered; he and his girlfriend are charged, he is out on bail (is the girlfriends still in custody?)
Were they all living on welfare?
Probably.
During a period he was in custody, he maintains he was smeared with excrement.
That, and a bullet is what he deserved imo.
The self-styled sheik was shunned by Australia’s Muslim community who disputed his claims of being a Sheik, according to community leader Dr Jamal Rifi
He had gained media attention in the past for a “hate mail” campaign, protesting the presence of Australian troops in Afghanistan by sending abusive letters to the loved ones of dead Australian servicemen.
Late last year he was charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and mother of two.
More recently he was charged with a raft of offences in relation to indecent and sexual assault while operating as a self-proclaimed “spiritual healer” in Sydney’s west more than a decade ago.

He was on bail at the time of the siege and due to appear in court over indecent and sexual assault charges in February 2015.
Earlier this month Monis announced via his website he used to be a Rafidi, one who rejects legitimate Islamic authority and leadership, but “now I am a Muslim”.

A most unfortunate situation. Glad the mohammedan is dead. My condolences to Australia, especially to the family and friends of the dead and wounded.
There must be funds supporting Islamist groups here in the U.S.
The Islamist groups surely can be sued by people here in the U.S. of A. harmed by violence.
Traditional principles of vicarious liability include
Though associated with criminal law, these theories can be used to attribute fault to persons not directly related to an act that harmed a victim.
It must be proved that the others 'provided substantial assistance or encouragement' to those who did harm the victim.
In the SPLC suit against Tom Metzger and WAR the skinheads were not members of Metzger's WAR. But Metzger's rantings had influence over the mindless skinheads due to his reputation in the white supremacy movement
Tom Metzger recruited 16-year-old Mazzella and schooled him in the world of racist violence. Mazzella was sent to Portland to join up with and train the East Side White Pride [skinheads]. Members of that group later brutally murdered an innocent black man.
How is that any different that being "recruited" by Islamism?
The aiding and abetting theory fits because
Lawyers can invoke the aiding and abetting theory with relative ease. Invoking the aiding and abetting assumes two independent actors.
To prove an aiding and abetting claim
Civil conspiracy was also used and proved against the Metzgers because he had contacted the East Side White Pride skinheads and after the murder and their arrest one skinhead called Metzger from jail. Here civil conspiracy might be proved by any contacts between the criminals and the Islamists' websites.
Obviously I am not a lawyer and this is a kind of an outline of information available on the Internet.
I recall reading about lawsuits following 9/11 including a suit against Saudi Arabia; to wit, from an Internet search
Jul 8, 2014 - The long-running case, brought by thousands of 9/11 victims, relatives and others, now proceeds toward trial against Saudi Arabia and other ...
