Police stormed a cafe in central Sydney early Tuesday where a gunman held more than a dozen hostages for more than 16 hours, firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades moments after captives were seen fleeing the buidling in terror.
A scene of pandemonium erupted in the early morning just minutes after hostages started emerging from the cafe on their own or in small groups.
Eleven hostages were reportedly accounted for after the police raid - Nine News reported. Sky News reported four people were injured. Live TV footage showed at least two people being taken away on stretchers but there was no confirmation of details.
One hostage was seen being carried out of the building. The woman seemed quite distressed and in a lot of pain as blood gushing from her legs.
After the raid, a bomb disposal robot was seen entering the cafe.
The dramatic end stage of the siege came as the gunman holding the remaining captives was revealed as a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis.
Monis is a 49-year-old man living in southwest Sydney, but is originally from Iran and a self-proclaimed sheik, and also sent hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers between 2007 and 2009, according to The Daily Telegraph.

TV News reporting 2 dead and up to 5 hospitalised. Not sure if gunman dead
One hopes he will now be living in a 5x8 prison cell.
I think it would be better with 72 Henry Waxman looking virgins.
Has anyone heard if a) the terrorist was killer and b) if any hostages were killed or injured. I hope the answer to the first is yes and the second is no.

All he had was a shotgun. No one should have died.
“Islam in Australia is a minority religious affiliation. According to the 2011 census, 476,291 people, or 2.2% of the total Australian population, were Muslims. This made Islam the fourth largest religious grouping, after all forms of Christianity (61.1%), irreligion (22.9%), and Buddhism (2.5%).” Wickipedia.
That implies he was executing people, and the authorities decided it was time to move.
He won’t be living anywhere from what I understand.
“I think it would be better with 72 Henry Waxman looking virgins.”
Now you’re just being cruel and vengeful (and I appreciate that).
TV News just confirmed 2 Dead and 3 in serious condition in hospital, no word on gunman condition. This all after the gunman apparently shot a hostage.
In wake of counter-terror raids, Islamic Council of Western Australia plans hotline so Muslims can report Islamophobia

The pattern never changes: in the wake of a jihad terror attack or plot, Muslims in the West do not do what they should do: redouble their efforts against jihadis in their own communities, and their cooperation with law enforcement officials. Instead, they claim that they are being victimized by a backlash and try to seize the spotlight as victims. The mainstream media, of course, is all too willing to oblige.
His mosque should be smoldering ruins by now.
And why wasn't this guy dragged out to the street and shot when he did this?
The most logical first response
“All he had was a shotgun”??? You think that if someone was holding you with “only” a shotgun that you would come out alive? The scumbag probably started killing the hostages as soon as the commotion began. Depending on the type of shells, at close range he could have easily killed several with one shot or several quick shots.
Besides that, the shotgun is the only weapon they KNEW he had, he may have had more.
Hope he’s dead.
Why he wasn’t deported long ago is beyond me.
