Police stormed a cafe in central Sydney early Tuesday where a gunman held more than a dozen hostages for more than 16 hours, firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades moments after captives were seen fleeing the buidling in terror.
A scene of pandemonium erupted in the early morning just minutes after hostages started emerging from the cafe on their own or in small groups.
Eleven hostages were reportedly accounted for after the police raid - Nine News reported. Sky News reported four people were injured. Live TV footage showed at least two people being taken away on stretchers but there was no confirmation of details.
One hostage was seen being carried out of the building. The woman seemed quite distressed and in a lot of pain as blood gushing from her legs.
After the raid, a bomb disposal robot was seen entering the cafe.
The dramatic end stage of the siege came as the gunman holding the remaining captives was revealed as a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis.
Monis is a 49-year-old man living in southwest Sydney, but is originally from Iran and a self-proclaimed sheik, and also sent hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers between 2007 and 2009, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Per Twitter, it is beginning to sound as if at least two of the wounded hostages were shot by police....
Hostage taker shot one hostage, then police opened fire.

Australia has created giant Disarmed Victims Zones in its cities with the recent “Gun Contol” legislation.
They managed to save most of them from the Dead Imam!!..

I think once a hostage taker starts to kill the hostages, about the only thing they can do is rush the place and try to save the rest, since he’s obviously going to kill them anyway.

It is emerging just before 2am a hostage tried to make a break for it, was shot dead, the Police somehow realized what had happened, and went in.

It sounds like none of the hostages were carrying a concealed handgun. It’s such an amazing coincidence that these terrorist always seem to target places where nobody else carries a gun. It’s too bad one of the hostages wasn’t armed. Maybe the terrorist would be the only one dead.
I guess details will emerge. I’m assuming they didn’t take him out at the very beginning (when he was near the windows) because he had probably said or implied that he had explosives; I saw that they had sent bomb detection equipment into the building.
Horrible situation, one in which there’s no totally good resolution. Well, except that this time they at least managed to kill the terrorist, which is at least part of a successful resolution.

She probably has the other bombs he referred to as ‘devices’ in another area of Sidney....find her and arrest or take out may be why they were taking so long to take out the fake Sheik.

Something like this is going to happen here in the states and indeed something similar if not exact has already happened. But it is more likely to be repeated in areas with high gun control and less likely to happen where gun ownership and carry percentages are high. OTOH, it's already happened on a military base and unless the Pentagon and WH brass get their heads removed from their fourth point of contact, will happen again.
Still happens here all the time.
Why is this breaking news and why would some terrorist make some obscure cafe in Australia a target?

My theory on how/why it played out in the end...
A group of hostages managed to escape and the perp decided to make an example of one of the remaining to discourage further escapes. As soon as he shot the hostage - police had no option to start a rescue...

With glass (no telling if it's "safety glass" either) between them, that's not as easy as you might think especially with the close proximity of hostages. A less than instantaneous lights out could result in a hostage massacre.
