Police stormed a cafe in central Sydney early Tuesday where a gunman held more than a dozen hostages for more than 16 hours, firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades moments after captives were seen fleeing the buidling in terror.
A scene of pandemonium erupted in the early morning just minutes after hostages started emerging from the cafe on their own or in small groups.
Eleven hostages were reportedly accounted for after the police raid - Nine News reported. Sky News reported four people were injured. Live TV footage showed at least two people being taken away on stretchers but there was no confirmation of details.
One hostage was seen being carried out of the building. The woman seemed quite distressed and in a lot of pain as blood gushing from her legs.
After the raid, a bomb disposal robot was seen entering the cafe.
The dramatic end stage of the siege came as the gunman holding the remaining captives was revealed as a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis.
Monis is a 49-year-old man living in southwest Sydney, but is originally from Iran and a self-proclaimed sheik, and also sent hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers between 2007 and 2009, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Rest In Distress!
This will disappear from the news as fast as you can say “religion of peace.”
I would have no problem with police raids of all mosques right now. Seize all assets of said mosque and question any one inside. Then turn it into a nice BBQ restaurant.
One civilian too many. Islam kills again.
I recall reading that Australian citizens who are ex-military could carry handguns. I'm not sure it that's true or if so, how common it is.
They have guns but at a considerably lower numbers than in the USA. Plus this is in a city which brings the numbers down even more.
Screw their feelings. Until they decide to stop killing innocent people be not following Islam, they should all be treated as a potential imminent threat.
the preponderance of evidence point to the NEED to rid oursleves of this very real menace...ASAP!
NO CRUSADE,,,NO PEACE!
Live pictures show that The Suits have just arrived — each with an attache case tucked under their arm..
...self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis... a 49-year-old man living in southwest Sydney, but is originally from Iran and a self-proclaimed sheik, and also sent hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers between 2007 and 2009.And a rapist, and probably a murderer.
Fully agreed—my initial post was something of a gentle understatement. I remember some years ago in Toronto there was a bank hold-up and a teller was fatally shot in the head. The reporter noted that the robbers had been armed with a shotgun and a pistol, but that it had not yet been determined which weapon had fired the fatal shot. Obviously the people involved were not familiar with the weapons involved as an answer to the question “does the teller still have a head” will also answer the question as to which weapon was used.
I’d love to send about a $100 of bacon to stuff in his coffin.
I think a smaller, box like structure.
The siege has ended.
The world is not a perfect place, but in a more perfect place, a terrorist walks into a cafe with a gun and twelve people pull out theirs; end of story.
And "this was just another unfortunate case of workplace violence"
In any situation under 25 yards, a shotgun would probably be my weapon of choice.
Yes, I made the correction several posts down from the original. The PA situation hits home I grew up in that area. Lived in the Harleysville, Souderton, Landsdale area! Sorry for the confusion!
