Who Harry Reid Caved to in His Final Major Act as Majority Leader Will Blow Your Mind
Independent Journal Review ^ | December 14, 2014 | Mike Miller

Other than the Koch brothers, there is arguably no one outgoing-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid disdains more than the Tea Party. And no one represents the Tea Party in the Senate more than Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Yet, after hours of tedious wrangling, Reid on Friday agreed to allow a vote on a measure from Cruz questioning the constitutionality of President Obama’s executive order on Deferred Action, which does, in effect, grant de facto amnesty to upwards of 5 million illegal aliens.

Cruz told Breitbart News that a Senate vote on Obama’s executive action was important for two reasons:

“First, since President Obama enacted his unilateral amnesty after the elections, Democrats have never been made to answer for it.

Tonight, they will and they will show America whether they stand with a lawless President, who is defying the will of the voters or the millions of Americans who want a safe and legal immigration system.”

“Second, it allows Republicans to also show they are committed to ending Obama’s amnesty once and for all in the next Congress.

If we agree it is indeed unconstitutional, we have no business funding it when the GOP controls Congress last year. The Constitution matters, and we must defend it. That is why we have fought so hard to ensure this vote.”

During Friday’s testy chess match between Reid and Cruz, along with Texas Senator Mike Lee, Reid sought unanimous consent to adjourn the Senate until Monday, when Senators were scheduled to vote on the CRomibus government-spending bill. Cruz and Lee objected to the unanimous consent vote.

Reid finally relented, and decided to keep the Senate in session over the weekend, during which time he agreed to allow Cruz’s point-of-order vote to proceed.

The vote, which occurred Saturday night, was expected to fail — Cruz knew it would – and it did. Unsurprisingly, all 53 Senate Democrats (along with 2 independents) voted against it. Surprising, so did all but 22 Republican Senators. (Cromnibus passed late Saturday night).

Even more surprisingly, with poll after poll continuing to show a majority of Americans opposed to Obama’s unilateral action on amnesty, 23 Republican Senators voted with the Democrats — and by extension, Barack Obama.

Now, Senate Democrats and Republicans are finally on the record over Obama’s unilateral move on amnesty. With 2016 right around the corner, Cruz got exactly what he wanted. From Harry Reid, of all people. Go figure.

McCain & Flake are on notice. No one in DC represents northern Arizona conservatives.

Rubio is going to have a difficult time paddling upstream to get above the waterfall he dropped over. It’s nice that he is still trying though.

Invar, you offer thoughtful, but defeatist words. The enemy did not get where they are overnight. We can successfully push back against this evil.

When idiots in St. Louis can fight and get great recognition for their lamentable efforts, imagine how much more the whole of good can leave wrought.

The only concern we have is our own willingness to make every excuse to quit.

Invar, you offer thoughtful, but defeatist words.

I imagine you would say the same thing to John Adams who warned of the very same thing that I am.

Liberty lost is never regained.

In an age of wickedness and deceit, the truth when spoken, is often hated by the very people a servant is trying to save. Jeremiah comes to mind.

Optimism is not going to overcome tyranny anymore than wishful thinking would alleviate the Colonists from the oppression of the Crown. We've been deluded with the big lie, that optimism and faith in the institutions of men can save us.

They cannot, and they will not.

It is going to take acting outside of what is corrupted in order to do what is necessary to preserve what is left of liberty.

The enemy did not get where they are overnight. We can successfully push back against this evil.

I find no example in human history of incrementally reversing tyranny via civil means. Not a single instance.

I am nor advocating quitting. I am advocating fighting on ground and via means of our own choosing, and not that of our wannabe taskmasters who have corrupted the ground to their own perverted advantage.

It's time we wake up to where we have arrived and what has been done to us.

It is time to use the tools our Founders gave us to exercise our right to alter and abolish a lawless regime that has evinced and put into motion, a design to reduce us to absolute despotism.

And it is not going to come via civil means, anymore than prostrating before the Throne and Parliament was able to stave off the inevitable.
