Culture ministry says it will press charges against activists for damage to world heritage site as UN climate talks began in Lima
Greenpeace has apologised to the people of Peru after the government accused the environmentalists of damaging ancient earth markings in the countrys coastal desert by leaving footprints in the ground during a publicity stunt meant to send a message to the UN climate talks delegates in Lima.
A spokesman for Greenpeace said: Without reservation Greenpeace apologises to the people of Peru for the offence caused by our recent activity laying a message of hope at the site of the historic Nazca lines. We are deeply sorry for this.
Rather than relay an urgent message of hope and possibility to the leaders gathering at the Lima UN climate talks, we came across as careless and crass.
Earlier Perus vice-minister for culture Luis Jaime Castillo had accused Greenpeace of extreme environmentalism and ignoring what the Peruvian people consider to be sacred after the protest at the world renowned Nazca lines, a Unesco world heritage site.
He said the government was seeking to prevent those responsible from leaving the country while it asked prosecutors to file charges of attacking archaeological monuments, a crime punishable by up to six years in prison.

That was not an apology.
It first seeks to futher Green Peace's original message and then it says only that they came across as careless and crass. How about they were careless and grass (and even those words don't describe what they did.
“Environmentally sensitive”? It’s a desert.
LOL...does Lekson really have his rules? Sounds like early quantum entanglement.
This picture just sickens me. These animals are destroying something (in part) created by "Mother Earth"...the very thing they've sworn to save.
The article says they messed up a line but was not clear. Did they actually mess up a part of the drawing?
I think GreenPeace and anyone on record of giving them money or any kind of support should be part of a multi billion dollar settlement.
The prosecutor mentioned the possibility of an eight year term in prison.
Hope they enjoy their stay.
Have them arrested and sent to prison in Peru.
Hope they then get the full “MIDNIGHT EXPRESS” treatment in
jail..........
Elitists.
‘The Greenies should be glad that Peru is not going all Aztec with them. The Aztecs were extremely brutal and savage in there worship rituals. I wont describe them here just before dinner,
but the average Free Rep. already knows about it.’
Yeah, a ‘heart transplant’ was only partially done.
I don't think even Greenpeace would be stupid enough to use paint. Looks like plastic. Probably already removed.
But rolling rocks around with their tongues sounds good.
For some odd sinking feeling, I don’t think any of them will serve any serious time for the trampling act. Green Peace thinks they are too big to fail, and people buy into it.
He trashes the traditional archaeologists as being ineffectual
He gets right to the nitty gritty
You should read his work if you have an interest.
BTW
bert’s corollary
the kids moved away
the old folks died
it is true now
it was true then. the study of recent abandonment will yield the same results as the study of old abandonment
Throw their communist asses in jail where they belong.
Nobody “took offense” to their actions. They are upset because they irreparably damaged the site. They didn’t come across as “careless and crass”, they were. Idiots.
“Greenpeace said Kumi Niadoo, its international executive director, would travel to Lima this week to apologize personally and represent the group in discussions with Peruvian authorities.”
Don’t let any of the Greenpeacers in the country. They have already demonstrated how responsible they are.
Anyone who sends money to these greenpeace idiots is insane. Of course, all LIBs are insane.
From the article: "It's not a matter of money. The damage is irreparable." Due to the dry, windless, and stable climate of the plateau and its isolation, for the most part, the lines have been preserved since they were constructed by the Nazca Indians between 400-600 AD. The hummingbird etching was the most pristine of all of the figures and a revered cultural icon of the Peruvian people.
For Greenspeace to have desecrated the World Heritage archeological site, puts them on equal footing with other eco-terrorists, including the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001. How disgustingly ironic that the message they sought to send, "Time For Change: The Future Is Renewable" was done at a location and in such a way that it will never be able to be "renewed" to it's original form.
Greenspeace says that they are remorseful but that is not enough to bring back the site to it's original, untouched condition. Without even getting permission to do what they did from the government (which would never have been allowed), they are no different than any other criminals who violate the law. They should be arrested, tried, convicted and thrown into prison for their stupid, ignorant, self-serving ideology.
Nevertheless, they should all be put up there and not released until it is pristine again. Let THEM figure out how to unscramble an egg.
Given the fact that they were stupid enough to mess with the site to begin with to make some stupid political statement, they should all go to jail and pay for the damages while the experts should try and fix the damage.
